Brutal World War I Trench Battle

One of the best battle scenes ever, especially when you realise it was made in 1930 `All quiet on the western front` Im not sure about the music in the background (it`s really ironic though), you decide..

The madness is captured very well in this film, especially if you look from 2:07 to 2:43, just imagine the waste of life from men charging head-on into machinegun fire.

Great movie, great book, but the music just doesn`t fit. I don`t really get why the music was added in fact, really a waste.

My grandfather did that (charging head-on into machine gun fire) luckily for him he was captured by the Germans early on in the war (1915) and stayed as a POW until 1918. He bitterly hated Germans until the day he died.
Such is life.
Great film, crap music.
Original title "In the west nothing new"

Yes, this is the madness my grandfather swore to never let happen again. After seeing three of his brothers die in Italy in WW2, I think he understood well why WAR IS WRONG. And why facism is NOT OK.

Some of us haven`t forgotten.

just for a level headed response to sweden2007

My grandfather was born in 1900, and I`m only 28.. So why would boldfart have to be 55 for his grandfather to have served in WW1?

..just curious..

Music sounds like REM, not sure though

If you really want to see how violent the combat was once the soldiers reached the enemy trenches, go to your local military museum and take a look at the trench-fight weapons the soldiers were crafting. A lot of them looks like something from the medieval times.

my greatgrandfather just vanished in the Flemish mud...
craters get filled with rain water, you drown.
shelling plows the earth to a sucking mud 3 metres deep, you get sucked in and suffocate.

my other greatgrandfather survived the trenches but had lung damage from gas (not to mention emotional damage).

in WW2 things got a bit divided...on one part of the family someone joined the SS to fight communism in Russia (surviving Stalingrad) because the catholics were afraid of the heathens. on the other side some joined the resistance againts the Nazis.

And in the Korean war a distant relative went berzerk and butchered 3 bathing north koreans with a hatchet.
