With Americans like Maher and Hitchens (an American as of last year) leading the charge, perhaps the US really could experience the Enlightenment that is so long overdue.

edit for 990ctane: I`ll work on trying more one-word, mis-spelled, barely grammatical posts like "gay!" or "pwnage!". I was actually doing well, keeping things brief, until I entered into a protracted debate with Jareardy about the historicity of Jesus. Maybe I should`ve just responded to him with "WTF?!?!". I`ll try that next time :)

^Yeah Hitchens is awesome. No way would I want to get into a debate with that guy. Don`t forget Sam Harris and Daniel Dennet either. Harris is hilarious!

Oh no. Gotta leave it there or my comment will be longer than Klavlavs :)

While I agree that the constitution doesn`t need to correspond with a religions holy text.

I pity klav and maher for so pathetic. When will you stereotypical atheist understand that our "oppression" of our religion is just as oppressive as we feel your "oppression" of your lack of religion.

He just on national TV maliciously insulted a religion, calling it fairy tales.
This shows the true character of maher, a die hard atheist who runs on double standards and hypocrisy.

Klav, do us a favor and die already. You are to far up your own ass to be saved now. You are unable to get past your on views to relate to others, you do nothing but insult and oppress your views on others.

God damn you.

^^ Euthphyro:

What a wonderful example of "Christian Love". Thank you for saving me the trouble of having to point out how ugly and hateful religious fundamentalism is by being open about it, instead of hiding behind some false piety and fake humility - pretending to lovingly "share" your faith when really what you folks want to do is rule the world and stomp out everyone who disagrees..."lovingly". LOL!

I commend your honesty.

^ lol what a bullshit comment.

Lol, thanks for not responding on my comment, but instead spewing more shit from your mouth that only ends in patting your self on the back. You, and people like you use the same type of tactics. Avoid arguing, and attack me personaly instead of debating the subject.

Grow up kid.

yeah he was a catholic, teh catholics killed 60 million people during the crusades. bill allways comes across as an asshole when he talks about religion but he doesnt understand that religion doesnt kill people, religion is just ideals. retarded religious fanatics kill people and religion taken out of context kills people. hindus and zen and bhudist and many other religions believe in non violence.

You`re half-right. Yes, there are plenty of other peaceful societies out there and many of them include far more peaceful religions. There has simply never been a Jainist Inquisition, or Buddhist Crusade (although on the other hand, the hard-core Hindu nationalist party in India is the one mostly responsible for India`s nuclear weapons programme and mounting violence there; and during WW2, Buddhist temples in Japan were centres of extreme religious/nationalist warmongering).

There is something especially violent about the "monotheistic" religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, however. While religions like Buddhism and Hinduism (until very recently) peacefully coexisted with other faiths in their midst, every place the religions of Jehova went, war and conflict followed. Perhaps it has something to do with Jehova being a "jealous" and violent god, as reflected in the scriptures.

I don`t think you can let religion off the hook, however, and blame religious violence on "religion taken out of context"; when the Bible says homosexuals should be killed, and an Orthodox Jew attempts to kill a Gay father, marching in the Gay Pride parade in Israel last year, I think the perpetrator`s religion is at least partially to blame. Would the attacker in question have done the same thing if he had grown up a neo-Pagan, worshiping homosexual Greek gods? or what if he`d been an atheist?

As I`ve pointed out before, it`s no coincidence that the most peaceful societies are also the least religious. Everywhere you look, those societies where religion is margialised and diminishing in influence (Western Europe, Northern Europe, Japan, etc.), also happen to be the most peaceful and prosperous places. The opposite is also true, the more religious a society is, the more violent and inhumane, especially where the "monotheistic" faiths are concerned.

Is religion a `cause` or `effect`? Probably both. We at least know that without religion as a cause, religious violence is absent as an effect. That`s a good start.

Skeptical? Think of the least religious place you can imagine. According to statistics compiled by organisations like the OECD, countries like Holland, the Czech Republic and Japan rank low on the religiosity scale. Nice places. Now imagine the most religious place you can think of. Perhaps Taliban Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia or Bible Belt USA...

I rest my case.

Euthpyo wants to equate Atheism with other religions, making it out to be the same as every other oppressive belief system. The problem is it isn`t the case, atheists like Maher and Hitchens don`t want to force their non belief system on people who are religious, we simply want you to not be able to force your beliefs on us. By taking god out of things like the pledge or off our money we do not deny you the right to believe or worship. By his calling religion a fairy tale and other names he doesn`t force you to stop being faithful. He just views the belief as silly as do many people. If you ask most Christians what they think of Zeus, Odin, Bal, Ra, or maybe even Ganesh(sorry for the misspelling) they will say they think they are a fairy tale. The difference is Maher and the rest of us Atheists think its true of all religions not just ones that don`t exist or have gods with elephant heads.
This is not the same as the oppression of forcing an entire society to live under a set of religious laws we do not agree with. The bible has more then just the ten commandments, those are only the top ten list. Other religious laws are brutal and barbaric, and that includes religions like Buddhism, which creates theocratic states ruled by monks (exp. Tibet). Oppression of the majority can`t exists it is an impossibility , Christians whining about being oppressed by atheists have no concept of oppression. I`m not saying Atheists can`t oppress religion or that is has never happened, but that in this day and age a secular non religious state which refuses to grant Christianity or any religion tax exempt status or superiority is not oppression. And moreover being offended by people like Bill Maher and the rest of us atheists isn`t either. You have the right to freedom off and from religion, you do not have the right to not be offended.

I`m not claiming sides here, but if you happen to represent the "religious" point of view here in these comments, then I think I`ll pass.

OK Euthpyro, You say they avoided your arguement, so I wont.
You say Bill is out of line because he called the bible fairy tales on TV. Countless Christans call the bible the truth, the way, and the word of God every single day on TV. One for One billion, an eye for a billion eyes. We even? Now lets take a look at some of the views you want klav to relate to.

Deuteronomy 13
12If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
13Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known;
14Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you;
15Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.

This is after it tells you that if a member of your family worships another god you should be the first to try to kill him before you get the rest of the town involved in the killing. So um... yeah I`ve seen the light! It`s all clear to me now. Kill everybody that doesn`t agree with you. That`s how we need to run this country.../sarcasm.

Now it`ll be interesting to see him backpedal trying to explain why that doesn`t count because the bible is an old book and a lot of it is bullshit, but it`s the word of God himself true bullshit that should be ignored because it was back when god was an egotistical psychopathic schizophrenic, but he took 7 days to make himself a new brain and performed the transplant himself, so he`s not crazy anymore.

its not the fact that bill mahr is going around and saying that you should press religion in other peoples faces, but when you go around on larry king, making movies, and talking about religion all the time(and whenever he talks about religion he just sounds so fucking condescending like he knows whats good for you) it sounds more like hes pushing it into peoples faces than asking them not to press religion in your face. i like what bill mahr has to say on some things, but we are far past the point of taking religion out of shit, no prayr in schools no pledge of allegiance no ten commandment displays, what the fuck is bill mahr campaigning for?!?!?!?

on a lighter note...

Judaism, Christianity, and Islam..klavlav those are all from the same religion judaism spawned islam and later christianity, or however it happened. why do people say THE BIGGEST MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS when theyr all from the same religion.

"Now imagine the most religious place you can think of. Perhaps Taliban Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia or Bible Belt USA..."
umm how about tibet with teh monks, places in africa we havent fucked up, and lets not forget that the place with MORE CHURCHES IN IT THAN ANY OTHER PALCE IN THE UNITED STATES.. its either per capita or per square foot..ANYONE?? ITS IN WAHIAWA IN HAWAII. yes people in hawaii are highly religious, i drive to work and see the overflowing parking lot at the catholic church at like 7 in the morning on a weekend.

^^ Wonderful link! Thanks, Tamster!

There`s another good one on that site. I think the definition of "bright" they discuss would resonate with many here:

http://w-uh.com/posts/030910-are_you_bright.html

ckyvick:

If
you`ve seen any of my other posts on the subject, you will notice I often refer to "Judeo-Christian-Islam" or some such variant to express the connectedness of those religions. Despite that connection, they are all quite different.

What they share, however, in addition to varying degrees and varieties of monotheism, is a history of violence and conquest. Simply put, those faiths never went any place where they did not also bring bloodshed and oppression.

Buddhism`s spread from India to SE Asia and to China, from China to Japan etc. has no such bloody footprint. Likewise for Taoism, Jainism, many faiths and philosophies in fact. Oh, there have been occasional clashes. But nothing compared to the scorched earth that the followers of Jahweh bring.

Again, there`s something especially violent about the religions that sprang from a belief in that jealous war-god Jahweh, a violence that continues to this day.

Hawaii, you say? The churches you see there are hardly benign. They are the latest in a long, yet recent, history of cultural genocide of Hawaiian indigenous beliefs, language, and people. The churches you see there are simply continuing what churches have done for centuries, first violently, then "peacefully", but always with the result of wiping out any and all though that conflicts with church dogma.
