^^^ Well, with the projectile travelling at Mach 8, you`d be dead long before the sound waves reach you for you to hear anything.

Truly mind boggling technology, though I can`t help but wonder what we would be able to achieve if we invested this kind of time, money and knowledge into developing things that aren`t designed for war.

It never siezes to amaze me how much engineering, science and money we are willing to spent on blowing eachother up.

They`re coming right for us!

The Nimitz class aircraft carrier is powered by a nuclear reactor.

It`s the storage capacitors that are the problem. You use an ordinary power supply to charge the capacitors over a fairly long time, and they then discharge in a matter of milliseconds. Just like a big frikkin flash gun.
Problem is that the capacitors are very bulky. With current technology you could probably get them all in the Nimitz, with room left for a cheese sandwich.

If this does actually work this will be a repetition of history, during WWI when the dreadnaught was made it outclassed all other ships by such a margin it made them technically obsolete, this could do the same for all conventional projectile weapons. Although we now have rockets, airplanes and submarines that do quite alot to change the ocean front.

Amazing, only in the USA would they spend billions and billions of dollars developing killing machines.

Then spend a miniscule ammount on your ignorant, illiterate citizens.

I bet you`ll praise it when its the only device capable of shooting down an impending meteor shower doom. (Ace combat 6 reference there)

They do have these on Battleships already, they divert power from the diesel engines to the guns to fire.

For all the DIY ppl, google `Coilgun` if you want to make your own Railgun.
