More Wii, Less PE To Fight Obesity

Article Submitted by master911.

PE teachers are replacing medicine balls and tennis racquets with televisions and Nintendos in an attempt to curb childhood obesity.

Five schools in the central English region of Worcestershire have been trialling the use of the popular Nintendo Wii console to encourage students to participate in physical activities, the Daily Mail reported.

Children who had a habit of missing PE classes began turning up to play virtual tennis, baseball, golf and ten-pin bowling, the report said.

A Droitwich and Worcester City School Partnership spokesman told the Daily Mail that students went on auto-pilot once they picked up the controllers.

The use of computer games to increase physical activity levels and raise attainment to some would seem contradictory,” the spokesman said.

But with rigid structures in place and by using specific games, students soon found themselves being active and engaged almost without realising it.

The British Government said it was encouraged by the scheme.

A spokesman for the Department of Health told the paper the use of Wii should lead to further activity in “real” sport.

“We welcome the positive impact that innovations like these can have as an important first step towards getting people to participate in a broader range of physical activities and to enjoy the many benefits of a physically active lifestyle,” the spokesman said.

Studies have shown that playing Wii games is not a substitute for real exercise.

The Wii console was one of the world’s most popular Christmas presents last year.

That is just sad, video games as PHYSICAL education? I know its a wii and its interactive but come on.

Before you know it our kids are going to end up like Stephen Hawking but instead of being paralyzed from Lou Gehrigs disease it will just be from pure laziness.

Think Wii isn`t exercise? Try doing 10 games of boxing without sweating.

Hellrazer: Been replaced with more entertaining workouts.

Have you ever played DDR? Try that on heavy on a fast song. More fun than running laps and you can easily see your progress (I got AAA instead of an A this time!)

Exercise is boring. We need virtual scoreboards with e-crowds cheering us on to increase your real life self-esteem. Then only can the fat kids grow up to be not so fat video-game engineered products of the future.

that`s kind of dumb, that`s the most expensive PE equipment i`ve ever heard of. wii does make you sweat but it isn`t a substitute for real exercise. someone`s going to steal them, and incentive for PE attendance with video games is lame. i`m not sure but i think PE classes have been phasing out of the curriculum more and more. i`d take it out too because you`re supposed to be smart enough to exercise on your own at home, but people rarely do that. in my high school it was changed so there was PE for only 9th and 10th grade, but half of 9th grade PE was basic health and sex ed, and half of 10th was for driver`s ed

Sweating doesn`t equal exercise. You can sweat from stress or heat, it doesn`t mean you are getting into shape. Even if you are burning calories, there is no cardiopulmonary (the stat that actually matters to our health) improvement unless you sustain steady and extended periods of high heart rates with physical activity. Sorry but I play the Wii and whipping you hands around for 3 minutes in a boxing match isn`t anything close to exercise. The Wii is just another excuse for people to be fat and lazy. As if we needed another.
