The Thin Red Line

This 1998 movie is "director Terrence Malick's adaptation of James Jones' autobiographical 1962 novel, focusing on the conflict at Guadalcanal during the Second World War." Alternative trailer created by eldusto84. A movie well worth seeing for its fine cast, visuals and depth.

Possibly one of the finest wartime movies made. Absolute classic.

I love this movie, very moving and powerful, just imagine being in such a situation, our grandparents truely lived in crazy times. I have family who fought on different sides of the war (German and Dutch)can`t get enough of their stories. Thanks for the upload ShapeSphere.

Although I admit the movie is visually stimulating and magnificently filmed, the historical facts are lacking. Prime example of playing down Japanese fanatacism - they didn`t let themselves to be taken prisoner as easily in this movie. I`ve got other examples, but ... I`m too lazy to type them all up.

Good movie

Read the book though; its much better. Every American should read that book; it would shock many of them imo

I remember watching this in the theater. People were upset because it wasn`t just like Saving Private Ryan.

People don`t always like movies that make you think - they want movies that just make them feel.

I just re-read the book recently, and it still holds up.
Possibly one of the best war novels ever.

Movie was good too - I thought it was much less conventional and more interesting than most war movies.

Gotta disagree here. I absolutely could not stand this movie. Most of my family has served in the military, in various services, and I absolutely love to hear my grandfather`s stories about the European front in WWII. But from a film perspective, this movie was too long and never held a consistent narrative. Some of the visuals were good, but since visuals were all the movie ever really had going for it, that`s not particularly helpful.

Malick has never been a particularly good director, despite however celebrated he may be. He`s the film equivalent of Herman Melville - lots to say, arty in the saying, but fundamentally not a good filmmaker. If you want a good pacific front movie, watch "Letters from Iwo Jima". That`s about the best to be found.

I loved this film. Saving Private Ryan was first, it had all the action and realism to it. Then this movie came and even though they are completely different in their own art, this one was the more captiviating.

Despite being an autobiography, didn`t know it was based from a book from the era. So I might try grab a copy now :) Writing is great because most people these days have no idea what they`re writing about when it comes to WWII.

I loved the movie... but this trailer is stupid. It makes it seem like it has the same action like saving private ryan or band of brothers....but about more than half this movie is about back at home.
