tabla, is a very hard instrument to play and perfect, ive been playing for well over 10 years and i wouldn;t be considered great in any sense, it takes immence dedication and perserverence to learn. Ustad Zakir Hussain is one of the greatest tablists in the world, in terms of being far recognized.

As for "chechnya" i suggest he keep his mouth shut and try to play either the tabla or the satrungi and find out how much more desire you need to have to learn how to play. playing a single note would be beyond your capabilities, a single note on a tabla is much marder then you can even imagine, ive seen people spend weeks trying to get a single note, and anyways the satrungi and tabla have been around for many more years then either a violin or the modern western drums..idiot.

and Biinge...just so you know, ya the fingers come in quite useful with the ladies since yu have a very good control over them ;)

^Agreed. I TRY to play the tabla. I love how the drum, dayan I believe(right handed) has the metallic sound, like hitting metal with sticks. The black spots on the drum do contain metal, the formula is a secret. Too bad I broke my bayan, the left drum (bass).
Tablas are also played in highly difficult beats cycles. Most Western music is a 4/4 measure. Some ragas(beats) can be like 3 times that length.

So yes, it takes time and dedication and teacher. Few people can learn this drum without a guru. It can sound annoying at first, learn about it and you will grow to enjoy the old sound.
Try listening to "Tabla beat science - Big Brother" Has a more western feel and a nice flow. Makes me nod the head always :)
