Origami Space Plane

Article Submitted by geoblaze.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo have teamed up with members of the Japan Origami Airplane Association to develop a paper aircraft capable of surviving the flight from the International Space Station to the Earth’s surface.

The researchers are scheduled to begin testing the strength and heat resistance of an 8 centimeter (3.1 in) long prototype on January 17 in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the University of Tokyo’s Okashiwa campus (Chiba prefecture). In the tests, the origami glider — which is shaped like the Space Shuttle and has been treated to withstand intense heat — will be subjected to wind speeds of Mach 7, or about 8,600 kilometers (5,300 miles) per hour.

A large spacecraft such as the Space Shuttle can reach speeds of up to Mach 20 (over 15,200 mph) when it re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere, and friction with the air heats the outer surface to extreme temperatures. The much lighter origami aircraft, which the researchers claim will come down more slowly, is not expected to burn up on re-entry.

No launch date has been set for the paper spaceplane, but Shinji Suzuki, an aerospace engineering professor at the University of Tokyo, is thinking ahead. “We hope the space station crew will write a message of peace on the plane before they launch it,” says Suzuki. “We don’t know where in the world the plane will land, but it would be nice to send a message to whoever finds it.”

Leave it to the japanese to do useless - yet ultimately awesome - experiments.

just like the toilet paper roll on top of head for crying. I, myself, prefer german inventions. wacky still but not as wacky as japanese and are a hell of a lot more useful.

"useless" is such a strong word. lets just call it "unnecessary"

clearly they dont have to worry about issues of things burning up in the stratosphere...if they are able to have some success with a paper airplane not burning up on its descent maybe it may open doors for new technological capabilities ?

The japanese have some insane levels of technology...im sure there is a reason behind scientists attempting such a thing..

^^^ agreed. the japanese having those insane levels of tech are the result of generally not being as small-minded as most of my fellow westerners, who tend to demean anything new out of habit, which basically is why the more far-out the idea or remote the odds of it being directly useful in a commercial way, the greater the odds it will trigger nay-sayers to deem experiments of fancy such as this to be "useless," never realizing the subsequent chain of discoveries that have been lost.

i like reminding people for such reasons that electricity would have worked just the same 2,000 years ago as it does today and we`d be that much further ahead now, but most of the experiments leading up to it`s current level of usefulness would also likely have been joked about as being impractical or restricted to the esoteric.. not to mention religious leaders torturing and murdering the proponents of science.. that didn`t speed things up either.

^ Agreed. What I wonder about though, is where would we be now if ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Sumerians, and the Mayans were still around, or if their take on science, construction, astronomy, and society were followed. The Egyptians built their pyramids with stones weighing between 4 and 80 tons from a quarry over 500 miles away, and all they had were rafts, donkeys, camels, and themselves. Surely if mankind adopted those methods we`d have a completely different view on architecture and construction.

As you mentioned though, religion halted the evolution of innovative technology and schools of thinking for 1,900 years or so. And now, because science and technology have advanced beyond our understanding, it shall inevitably bring about our demise.

All I really want now is to be cryogenically frozen and brought back to life 4 billion years from now, when The Milky Way collides with Andromeda. Oh the sight of watching another spiral galaxy colliding with our own would be truly invigorating and thought provoking to say the least!

But alas, we have to worry about monkeys killing other monkeys because one group of monkeys think they should have all the power while other groups of monkeys just want to survive and live without having some monkey tell them what they can and cannot do... Jeez, someone repost that "We`re all a bunch of monkeys" video. =(
