Computer Translates Dog Barks

Article Submitted by ug7344 .

Can't understand what your dog wants when it barks? A computer may be able to help.

Scientists at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary, recorded more than 6,000 barks uttered by 14 individual Mudis, or Hungarian sheepdogs, in six different situations — "stranger," "fight," "walk," "alone," "ball' and "play."

They then fed the sounds to a computer program, which was able to correctly categorize the barks 43 percent of the time — far from perfect, but much better than the 16.7 percent rate that would have arisen by chance.

The computer had the best results with the "fight" and "stranger" contexts, the worst with "play."

It was also able to pick out individual dogs just by the sound of their barks slightly more than half the time — again, much better than chance.

"Since we have no reasons to say that Mudis are special among other dog breeds, I am pretty sure that this method for categorizing barks could work in other dog breeds' barks as well," study leader Csaba Molnár told London's Daily Telegraph.

The study was published in the journal Animal Cognition.

You have to start somewhere and the phonetics of all different human language is quite large in number. Many things we know now are derived from studies on animals. i dont think this is a waste

$$$ Even for fun there is potential to make $$$ from the North American dog obsession. Dogs get fed better than the poor here, hell there is even telethons for stray domestic dogs. This is amazing to think of such an idea. Good luck with it, put up the companies name too.

There are shows dedicated to informing people about animal behavior, probably because every science is intertwined.

Studying and understanding the creatures around us helps us to understand ourselves.

Think before you post kids. If it weren`t for trivial scientific studies, you wouldn`t be able to do a lot of things. Pretty sure the PC was a trivial scientific pursuit at one time.

And this is when the computer found out my dog is a racist. No wonder he barks uncontrollably at minorities.
v edit: that may be true. I`m just trying to protect my belongings.

^ No, that`s because you taught him to hate minorities. It`s called "learned behaviour".

Sorry that really is useless. If you own a dog any reasonable person could tell when a dog is say angry, or when it is hungry, or playful, you pick that up yourself and they give visual cues. So you could probably get it right at least as often as the damn computer. Totaly totaly useless.

`Hmmm Snuffles is standing obediantly by his bowl poking his nose with it and barking from time to time..i have yet to feed him this week..better get out the old computer and see whats wrong with him` Totaly worth the thousands of dollars.

The scientists are looking for communication skills. A distinct bark can alert the rest of the pack etc etc.

The title "Can`t understand what your dog wants when it barks? A computer may be able to help." is stupid.

Mammalian communication skills are of concern to many scientific fields. Anthropology comes to mind.
