Excavating a Huge Ant Nest

The structure covers 538 square feet and travels 26 feet into the earth. In it’s construction, the colony moved 40 tons of soil. Billions of ant loads of soil were brought to the surface. Each load weighed four times as much as the worker ant, and in human terms, was carried over 1/2 mile to the surface.

This is by far the greatest idea ever. I mean to pour Xamount of cement into a HUGE ant colony and to really see how it all looks... WOW.

On a side not.. Damn ANT killers. ;)

This has really opened my eyes to the complexity of different lifeforms on earth. I always knew that they were amazing to a certain extent, but this has surpassed my wildest imaginations. The outline of that city has left my jaw hanging for minutes after the video had finished. I`ve been posting this to my friends to make sure they see this too. Nature is wonderful. 5/5

Might we possible extrapolate upon this to say that taken as a whole, this colony of ants functions as a self aware, indeed yes, a conscious thinking being in and of itself; perhaps even more perfect than man in it`s understanding and ingenuity of engineering, self sacrifice and above all, beauty. That taken, these scientists have committed nothing less than genocide in their endeavor to understand something that they could never hope to create in their lifetime. Fucking cocksuckers.

I agree, if its such an amazing accomplishment, why did they have to destroy it? Thats the history of humans, "Hey look at that beautiful statue that took years to create! Awesome, lets shoot some cannons at it!! That would be GREAT!!!"

When I see the care with which the scientists are excavating this amazing creation, I am at least slightly assured that these ants did not die in vain, nor for some trivial reason. We have a heavy footprint, us humans. I hope that by these learnings we can at least become aware, and thus choose more wisely, where and upon what we stomp. How else could we know what lurks under the surface, where we might otherwise tread with no clue and no respect?

I would really like to see a completed excavation, and 3D animation / breakdown model of what they found. Truly amazing work.

Well you have too! To understand something you have to play with it, destroy it, take it apart, put it in water. Killing one hive of ants isnt going to do anything on the micro or macro level of life.

Besides they are going to be the ones left alive anyways.
We were doomed from the start and Im not talking religion here. I believe its that damn thing called consciousness/self aware.

Ribosomes and Mitochondria work together to form a cell. Cells work together to form a certain tissue. This tissue works together with other tissues to form an organism, these ants, ourselves and all the other creatures on this planet. These ants work together to form their city, we work togther to form our city, and together we all work together to form our entire ecosystem, our entire planet. We are really not so special when you look at it from afar, and I`m kind of wondering what greater thing were a part of that we`ll never even know.

at first i thought he was going to avoid stepping on the ants at 0:40, once they started pouring concrete i realized "oh ok, theyre killing them all, nm". kill a few and its mean, kill them all and no ones gonna know.
