The biggest problems with American law enforcement are as much institutional as individual; most cops are very low educated and not well paid. You find a lot of ex-military on the force, kids who were duped by the Army`s promises of a land-of-opportunity waiting for them after the Army, only to find out that the only jobs they can find are dead-end, low pay jobs as prison guards and sheriff`s deputies.

Combine that with the fact that you really are dealing with the scum of the earth most of the time and you have a recipe for disaster.

The entire culture of law enforcement is a fraternity of low-skilled, low pay, low-educated frustrated men who, half the time, can`t decide if they want to save the world or beat it up. Most of them are testosterone junkies who are probably more like the criminals they chase than they care to admit. If they weren`t that way when they signed up, they certainly are after a few months on the job. It`s just like the Stanford Prison Experiment.

Incidences like this one are common and indicative of a completely broken system, and broken people, on both sides of the thin blue line.

i agree that this should result in punishment for excessive force, and she should be recompensated for medical and punitive damages, but 8 million dollars? those cops need to be fired though. the clip was super short and there`s no audio, but didn`t see anything happen that warranted more than making her sit back down. didn`t see any assault. liars.

That`s quite the generalization coming from you.

I agree that these cops are certainly in the wrong and should be punished, but to say that most cops are "bullies with badges" is obscenely ignorant.

Dead end jobs? In Canada law enforcement is an VERY lucrative field. There`s good pay, lots of perks, and a great pension.

Uneducated? Again, sounds an aweful lot like a gross overgeneralization.

I`m not saying in any way that they are in the right, they obviously aren`t.. But for someone that seems to have a notion of intelligence and abstract though I`m surprised (and dissapointed) to hear such vast stereotyping and ignorance.

Fuck the police, in every clip i have seen they use totaly unnessisary brute force to beat the shit out of people and its fucking stupid. Though not all police officers are this way its not a by the book take-down when your dealing with a older woman. she didne even put her hands up to defend herself, though if she did it would have been another bull shit charge on her im sure.

What really sickens me, is they sit there and watch the video, and continue to blatently lie and say they used appropriate force.
If they even for once admitted to making a mistake I would have a tiny bit of respect for them.

vyrtualdogg: Yes, those are generalisations (the `comments` section on Spiked is not quite the place for thesis dissertations on American "Law Enforcement": Pros & Cons...even though I try.)

The generalisations are fair, though, and as I`ve stated elsewhere, they come from having worked closely with police, and from being personally supportive of much of what they do, actually.

Indeed, my criticism of them is based on my support for them. The other half of my point, which I should have included, was that cops do deserve higher pay and better working conditions. They should also be held to a higher standard; advanced degrees and continuing education should be the status quo. To the degree that it is in some places, you do see less of these kinds of incidents. Good cops should view the bad ones in their midst as a threat to everyone`s safety, cop and civilian alike. There is still too much institutional silence that shields bad cops.

Social services in the US need to be overhauled; the cops in this video were dealing with someone who arguably should have been dealt with by mental health professionals, not deputies. Police should be trained to deal with mental illness, but they aren`t pros in that area and should not be expected to be.

Finally, American laws are badly in need of reform. Cops should be relieved of the stupid, petty laws they often are required to enforce and focus on real threats to safety and property.

The videos posted here depicting police violence are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the problems of a broken system, from line officer to courtroom, to jail, to legislature and health-care system.

Unfortunately, the folks that pay are too often helpless and disenfranchised (8 million dollar lawsuits are *not* the norm). In short, bad cops are the one who should find themselves on their asses (figuratively) not poor mentally ill folks.
