Only depending on the circumstances. Sure it throws out lots of lead, but it is not aimed nearly as accurately or as virsitile as a rifle.

^^ most times when riflemen were used, they were lined up in rows to shoot at rows of opposing riflemen, with a sweep that thing could wipe out a battalion

Basically against squads of riflemen that were lined up to be shot, the gatling gun had no competition, but if the riflemen have a lot more mobility.

I would have invented a better gun that fired a big long ass bar sideways, might as well how shitty those guns were, the bar probably would have spun too doing more damage to those dumbass lineups.

True, it can turn out more shots/hits than the 15 riflemen, but what if one of those 15 riflemen shoot the guy firing the Gatling gun o.0

It isn`t exactly accurate, its more of a suppressing gun. The rifle man can be much more accurate and one single round placed center of mass would take out a man.

Edit: I guess ya for its era it was deadly, but I still like my motto of "One Shot One Kill", it`s so much cooler. Any idiot can "Spray and Pray"

^^ i agree with you to a certain extent... cuz when u think about it, a gatling gun aimed center of mass, could possibly wipe that mass out...

Any they also don`t tell you how often the Gatling gun jammed.

You have to consider the conditions... except for snipers, armies at that time didn`t use cover, and were packed very tightly together. Accuracy didn`t much matter, it was mostly the number of shots... gatling gun was better then a vastly larger number of riflemen, period.

As for the guy operating the gatling gun getting shot, well... did you notice that, in a war, he`d have thousands of people backing him up, any one of which could drop their rifle and run over?

if it COULDN`T replace those men in a close-range, flat-out, pure volume of fire test where both had as much time as they needed to set up and neither the shooters nor their targets moved an inch...

what the hell good would it have been to anyone?

Plus vs. that many riflemen I severely doubt that the operators of the Gatling gun would have time to kill them all before they got shot, and so it`s a moot point how many rounds it can fire if everyone aims and fires for the Gatling operators before they can get into full swing.

Was a test really required to figure this out? Come on now...it was obvious!
