^^ Im not saying war was ever a great thing, but youve got to bear in mind that in those days, war was completly different from what it is now. Because men were forced to battle face to face, there was much more honour involved (although it must be said that the Romans had a shitty reputation when it came to honourable fighting).
For instance, in the ancient Greek wars, the most notable the Trojan War, it was not allowed to fight on a holy day, in honor of the Gods. If you know that every day in two was devoted to a God, since they had so many, they didnt do as much fighting as we think. They used those days to collect their dead and give them a proper burial, since it was believed that if you did not have a proper burial, you would not be able to pass into the underworld... War was also not always seen as a bad thing. In ancient times, it was often seen more or less as the next step in a negotiation process. It is only since the use of chemical weapons, especially in WW1, that its gotten real nasty...
So yeah, fuck war...

^ I had my high School majors in Ancient Greec and Latin, en enjoyed 2 hours of (mainly ancient) history a week. And unlike the American schoolsystem (or whatever yours is), ours didnt suck. (Flemish schools are rated second in the world, after Singapore.)
What I mean by war getting nasty in WW1 is the fact that war until then had been reasonably personal, and never an such a grant scale. This is perfectly illustrated by the fact that when the Germans used their chemical mustard gas for the first time, they were so struck by the terrible consequences that they did not know what to do. They had a chance to win a huge amount of terrain, but instead they got back into their own trenches and waited for the enemy to come back. Also, it is known that during the time of Napoleon, people would often go and see a battle from the top of a hill, as entertainment. I dont see me going to Iraq to look at anything really...
So before you say anything about being dumb, open a book yourself. You might actually learn something.

Nabucco is a pseudo-intellectual.

I find it funny how some of the greatest minds in history came from education systems that were FAR INFERIOR to ANYTHING that exists today, yet a person who claims to be intelligent would compare education systems.

The USA has 50 states, with hundreds of THOUSANDS of school districts, both private and public. Each one adheres to guidelines as far as what can and cannot be taught (mainly for public schools, as private schools do not need to adhere to this standard), but not HOW it is taught, and each state and school district has its own unique budget and management. An intelligent person would never make such a generalization. They would immediately recognize that they could never actually be right about such a claim.

A school in an innercity ghetto would have teachers who did not really want to be there, which definitely would result in lower education. Innercity ghetto`s are heavily populated but are still the MINORITY of the country. A school in a rural or suburban middle class area are usually filled with teachers who LOVE to teach and WANT to be there, guess what this results in? Guess what... Rural and Suburban middle class areas are the MAJORITY of the US. If you have an inner city school with lower education in the same district as a suburban middle class school with much better education... Guess what happens to the average? An intelligent person understands that averages are definitely useful as far as metrics are concerned, but they are not and never will be accurate measures of SPECIFIC EDUCATION LEVELS. How do you compare an average like this to a district that ONLY HAS suburban middle class schools? You can`t, but they still do. Which leads people with a lack of intelligence, yourself, to believe there is actually less education in an entire country with lower averages.

What does this mean? It means that unless you are going to criticize state-by-state and district-by-district, your generalization exhibits a lack of intelligence. Something a pseudo-intellectual cares nothing of.

That is all, great vid 5/5.

Haha, how a video on Rome can result in a debate about scholing systems.
I had no intention of insulting the entire American scholing system, and by no means did I want to insinuate that every American is dumb. However, scholing systems and their rankings can be quite usefull to determine the average basic knowledge of the individual living in that country. Scholing ratings are also important because they can tell a great deal about how biased certain scholing systems are. The Japanese still refuse to teach their children certain unpleasant things about the their past. That is why they score lower than other neighbouring Asian countries.
Its also interesting to see how different scholing systems emphasize different things. Europeans, in general, learn a lot more about Ancient history than do Americans. Dont ask me anything about American history though, we never even saw who the founding fathers were.
I dont claim to know everything, as pseudo intellectuals do. But if I was educated on a certain topic and want to share the information, I shouldnt be called a bullshitter, as Led Zeppelin was doing. If he had been known what he was talking about, he would have never made such an idiotic comment.
Now lets just enjoy the video(s), and stop bitching alltogether...

Honor is for story books. War has and always will be NASTY

The mongols used germ warfare, hurling plauge infected bodies at their enemy via trebuchet

Genocide and attempted genocide has been around longer than anyone can remember. Along with every other kind of attrocity in between pre Geneva convention.

The only reason they often fought face to face was because of technological limitations.

People go and watch plays for entertainment not war for enjoyment. Assimilation sucks arse and losing has some serious repercussions

As for war not being so bad, just the next step in the negotiation process.

I`m sure if we could just ask some one less educated than yourself from the time of back then. They mightn`t be so flippant in response when they explain to you that war is the LAST step in the negotiation process.

I never said war was nice... Spartans threw corpses of people infected with the plague over the walls of Athens, and this was 450 BC.
You do have to make a distinction between war with people, or war with heidens and barbarians. It was believed that slaves, barbarians en heidens could not be people, so it wasnt as bad to kill them as other civilised human beings...
The only point I was trying to make, was that in ancient times, people had a different view on war.

didn`t war get nasty when war itself was first waged? i think there are plenty of examples of earlier uses of nasty tactics than in WWI, like american colonists giving natives blankets soaked in smallpox puss. that`s some full blown bio warfare right there. today our media scare hypes up any mention of anthrax and smallpox. pretty ironic.

Also, to include on the debate of war and not school systems... in a sense, yes, chemical warfare could not be waged back in those days simply because they didn`t have the means for it on such a large scale. Poisons were prevalent, but, they couldn`t be used in mass quantity. So actually, biological warfare was used, by infesting the enemy cities with corpses infected with plague and disease. Yes, war was more personal back in the day, since fighting was face to face , but if they had the technology we have now, I`m sure Genghis Kahn would have loved to have a Chemical weapon... War is War, there is no way to make it seem pretty, people die and countries either fall or prevail, either way, war is hell, and no one wants to endure it....
