Apparently you don`t need a passport for domestic flights in Japan. Hence, she presumed the same in US. She`s stupid, but welcome to Japan.

If its a domestic flight in the US you also don`t need Picture ID. Most people don`t even know this (Not even most airport personal) But basically you can fly without identifying yourself you just basically have to go through every security check possible.
