TED Talks - David Keith

"A surprising idea for "solving" climate change" - Environmental scientist David Keith talks about a cheap, effective, shocking solution to climate change: What if we injected a huge cloud of ash into the atmosphere, to deflect sunlight and heat? As an emergency measure to slow a melting ice cap, it could work. Keith discusses why it`s a good idea, why it`s a terrible one - and who, despite the cost, might be tempted to use it.

Load of BS.
This guy is suggesting that we put money into putting earth into an iceage?
The Iceage at the end of the cretaceous period, that wiped out probably around 90% of the species on earth is thought to have been caused by ash being spewed high into the atmosphere, in effect causing a "nuclear winter". How is this any better than a world which is warming?

supposedly the brightest minds on the planet, and they still fail to see the warming trend were in is tiny compared to past ones weve had, and has happened countless times before...

global warming is a new religion, its just another scam being used to control us.

The purpose of preventing Global Warming is to keep us, the humans, and the different kinds of animals we like from becoming extinct. Yes global warming and global cooling has happened several times before, and it took a lot of species with it, and that is why we don`t want it to happen. We know that, even if it doesn`t eliminate us, it will eliminate many of the animals we want to exist. Why we care about the humans that will be living when that happens is very debatable, some care about it and some don`t, but the ones that don`t, don`t care about global warming because it will not kill them or make them live in an unpleasant environment. To think that it is a scam is nothing short of ignorant. But instead of trying to reduce or control global warming on this planet, I think we should just make a big space station the size of a few cities, fill it with plants to make oxygen with soil and water from the earth to support those plants, and give everyone a non-electric and non-fueled manual device to move around in the very low gravity environment, so that we are well above the earth and global warming does not affect anyone that lives there. I know its a crazy idea but I think we are well on our way to doing that in the next couple of hundred years. Just think of living in a place like that where you fly around all the time, instead of being stuck to the ground like we are here. Wow that was some good weed.

Humans (or their ancestors) have lived through several diffrent global warmings, and global ice ages though... A polar bear Jaw bone was discovered in the arctic recently that dates back 100,000 years... It was warmer 100,000 years ago than it is today...

The fact that several cycles of major warming and cooling have occurred before is only new news to the general public - new misunderstood fuel for a biased fire. Those of us who actually study Climate Models academically have always been very aware of these cycles and they have played an important role in understanding the "feedback" mechanisms in the climate.

The big question in our minds is not whether or not the climate is warming, but rather whether or not it is man-made (and it is) and whether or not there is anything that we can do about it. This call to action is directly due to the fact that we don`t want to see ourselves play a large scale role as inadvertent exterminators - not because Al Gore released a movie that made people feel good...

I get aggravated by people who attempt to rationalize what`s happening by using cute phrases like "It`s happened before!". Where did you get this information? The news? A magazine? A popular book? In 99.9% of the cases, you will have acquired this information from one of the previous sources. This means that you do not actually care about the dynamics of the climate, have never actually tried to understand it and you just regurgitate these contrite phrases like you have some mystical knowledge that those of us who actually study the climate don`t. If you won`t actually undertake a serious study to understand the climate, then won`t actually understand the phrases you speak and you have no business commenting on it - you don`t know anything, keep your mouth shut, you`re an embarrassment.

*shrug*

Would you care more if I layed out a careful proof?
Would you actually study these issues with a fervent desire to understand?
Would that inspire you to carefully inspect your comments?

If I need to carefully prove my above statement, I am talking to the wrong audience - it doesn`t take stupidity to miss these points, it takes ignorance.

Ignorance? Not exactly.

It takes ignorance to believe a bad science like global warming. Also, are we to just disregard that the climate has been changing for MILLIONS of years before humans - nay - MAMMALS walked the earth? According to you, this doesn`t mean anything. Also, nevermind the huge ball of nuclear fusion thats shining on our planet every second of every day of every year of every century... it`s just there for looks.

Global warming is junk science, and that is all.

-"It takes ignorance to believe a bad science like global warming."-

First of all - Global Warming is not a Science.

Global Warming is the name of an event used by Climate Scientists to talk about the current rate of global temperature change. Climate Science is a Science.

Comments like this demonstrate that you are scarcely partially educated about this matter.

Why don`t you do some reading on Climate Science for yourself?

-"Also, are we to just disregard that the climate has been changing for MILLIONS of years before humans - nay - MAMMALS walked the earth? According to you, this doesn`t mean anything."-

What? Who has ever denied that? You don`t have your facts straight.

Over the past 4.2 billion years, the climate has oscillated from extreme to extreme. Only in the past 20,000 years (coinciding with our Agricultural Revolution) has the Earth ever experienced such mild weather (or we can`t find evidence of this occurring prior)... That is commonly recognized and was NEVER the debate.

This debate is over whether or not human activity is accelerating these climate oscillations faster with greater vigor than would naturally occur and the consequences of these dynamics on the ecosystem.

YOUR argument is one of ignorance of the debate - only the news media propagates the LIE that, "This is the first time that this has ever happened." That is not what scientists talk about.

-"Also, nevermind the huge ball of nuclear fusion thats shining on our planet every second of every day of every year of every century... it`s just there for looks."-

#1 - It`s not a huge ball of Nuclear Fusion - it`s trapped plasma generated by Nuclear Fusion taking place on the surface of a mostly iron core...

#2 - Who has disregarded that? Why would you make such a baseless statement?

Let`s nevermind the fact that Jello reliquifies when you put it in the microwave as well...

#3 - I think that you should recheck your facts and your rebuttals. Your comments demonstrate a lack of understanding of this subject and your remarks are quite fruitless.

This is quite embarrassing for you...

Please, do some reading on the true facts before you post again.

Here are a few links to get you started:

http://www.scotese.com/climate.htm
http://www.realclimate.org/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Climate_model

Please respond with intelligent statements about what part of Climate Science is "junk science", and try to justify that by citing credible sources, or don`t respond at all.

Keep "junk comments", like your previous post, to yourself...

Alright... dodging the points are we?

In the meantime... Global Warming is BASED on science. Junk science. Here you go getting technical to make yourself look smarter than you are.

Great, so we all agree that the climate has been changing long before we`ve been here. On this point we see eye to eye. I misunderstood earlier, mostly because the typical person forgets that we`ve only been here for a miniscule fraction of time.

Once again getting technical... and doing so you missed my point. My point I was making was the fact that the sun is hot. Very very hot. The sun goes through cycles just like everything stellar in this universe. Just saying that quite possibly the sun is going through a warm season, and it is affecting the earth. If you would, explain the jello reference? I fail to see how that applies.

I have rechecked my facts and rebuttals. My comments demonstrate a decent understanding of the subject and my remarks are being avoided.

This is not embarrassing for me in the least.

Let me just go ahead and copy and paste text from a website to prove my point. Oh here, have a couple of links... those PROVE that I am right.

Keep your junk science, just like this video, to yourself.

What we fail to realize is that this happened a bunch of times already and we`ve got our heads so far up our asses that we can`t see ourselves as one of earth`s many species and not THE earth species. It`s not about cutting gas emission, it`s about staying the same. Climate change is cyclical and sooner or later it would wipe us out and the best we can do is postpone that moment as much as possible.
