Ted Talks - Gever Tulley

"5 Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Kids Do" Gever Tulley, founder of the Tinkering School, talks about our new wave of overprotected kids -- and spells out 5 (and really, he`s got 6) dangerous things you should let your kids do. Allowing kids the freedom to explore, he says, will make them stronger and smarter and actually safer.

It`s funny but my parents let me do every single one of those things. I had a pocket knife since I was little. I have never cut myself with it. My dad use to drive with me in his lap teaching me how to drive and I always took apart our old appliances to see how they worked.

So far I`ve graduated in the top 10% of my class in high school. I have a college degree and run my own business. I`ve also never been in a car accident and have a knack for being able to fix anything from TVs to refrigerators.

That`s so true. I know a guy who literally doesn`t know how to throw something. He even asked me to teach him how to throw. What`s there to teach?
It`s the same as language, nobody teacher you language when you`re a baby, you just pick it up as you go on... and the same method applies to learning foreign languages, no matter how much your spanish teacher insists that it`s not possible.
As far as knives go, I had plenty of accidents as a kid. I stuck a nail knife into my finger-bone once trying to open a hotwheels launching pad...
I also tried alcohol and cigarettes when I was 6 and now I can`t see the logic in consuming either of them.

While I dont agee with trying smoking and drinking at 6 years old I do agree with the vid. When i was 8 my dad bought me a high powered pellet gun which led to me getting into competitive paintball and then learning to buy and sell over the internet which led to my first source of income. I also used to build tree houses and zip lines as a kid on our property in the countryside. I was also mowing the entire property single handedly on a big ass mower at an early age. My dad also taught me to drive at age 7 and let me drive by my self at age 15. I would say that you have to let your kids be them selves and just offer them some general guidance and guidelines but not to restrict them in any way. I would also say that forcing your kids to read a certain amount before they can go play is a good idea as is getting them involved in sports. For me I used to do kickboxing and gymnastics before that which would help teach discipline respect motor skills and promote healthy activity and growth of any child.

I too agree with you. My family let me explore down at my grandparent`s house all the time(a few acres but full of trees so it seemed bigger). I was given a BB gun and a knife at 6. I was also in the Boy Scouts where I learned more about how to handle guns and knives. My grandma would let steer the car sometime when I was 4(too small to reach the pedals). My family also lived in an old house where we had to make repairs ourselves alot. I helped them which let me handle power tools as well. I didn`t try any alcohol or cigarettes though but I don`t either even now. Now I don`t own my own business or anything but I do have a Bachelor`s degree and I`m handy with tools and repairs.

hooray for taking appliances apart from an early age!
Its understated how vital this activity is to growing up! seriously if you have kids, give them a damn screwdriver and let them open shit up, then try and teach them to put it back together! Develops great skills.

My key chains for as long as i can remember had a pocket knife, its just useful... I never cut myself. Its so sad that kids now are so stupid and parents are so overprotective.

I love how some of the comments on here are aimed at "smoking and drinking" (smoking i can understand a little bit more, but drinking not at all) as if you smoke or drink your parents automatically failed or they are these mortal sins sent from the devil himself. Give me a beer and a marlboro.

As I told my wife when she was afraid our daughter would be hurt if she fell; don`t worry, the floor will stop her.

@Einherje:

Made me lawl.

It`s true though! What better way to motivate a child to walk if some sort of pain comes with falling? Either that, or she finds a way to catch herself and walk at the same time, thus avoiding pain.
