Citroen has already done a commercial like this...they`re just continuing the whole robot ad champaign...I`m pretty sure the first citroen commercial helped the move towards the new Transformer movie cuz I remember seeing a segment on Discovery channel about how the animators had to take a photo of every part (inside and out) of the car, when transforming there weren`t any extra parts suddenly appearing or things just disappearing and how the robot had to be within dimensions of the car...

the citeron adverts were what made producers/develop to push towards making a transformers film because they want to wait until it could be done well and look good, and the kind people at a advertising firm provided that.

While the ad might have been inspired by the old transformers stuff, it was these citroen adverts that made the film producers realise that they had the technology to make Transformers.
