Bouncing Bomb

Archive footage of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb being successfully tested. This weapon was then deployed against German dams during Operation Chastise by 617 Squadron in May 1943.

i`m pretty sure they dropped these from Lancasters flying super low to get the skipping right. they used the bombs specifically to destroy damns controlled by the germans.

"Bouncing Betty" was the nickname given by American troops to the German "S-Mine" whose sole purpose was to castrate and maim soldiers rather than kill them.

This thing is pretty cool, its dropped with a backspin so it dives under water before it explodes making more damage to dams.

If i remember correctly, they scrapped the sphere shell that was on the first drop because it would break apart disrupt the path of the bomb on top of the water. The figured out they didnt need it anyway and just started dropping the barrels

They lined up their distances mechanically. Two lights angled slightly inward indicated the correct height when they merge, and a sight with two lines on it lined up with points on the dam to indicate the correct distance.

After release the bomb was suppose to hit the dam but only blow up at a certain depth so it blew the dam out at the bottom.
