I don`t believe for a second that Washington is interested in `exporting democracy` to the middle east. If Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait were independent democracies, the US would lose the leverage it holds by controlling a huge proportion of the worlds oil.

The use of the expression is especially ironic in the context of Iran since it was the US and Britain who orchestrated the overthrow of Irans first ever democratically elected Prime Minister in 1953 - in order to control the oil.
