One of my long time family friends was Jack Ilfrey. He was accredited for becoming the first P-38 pilot to become an ace. He used to tell me stories being shot down in France. He said he stole a bicycle and some clothes and rode it all the way (over 200 miles) to the Normandy coast right after the invasion. He was one of the primary reasons I joined the military.
