I read the story. It did not mention the burglars having weapons. It did mention them having wives and kids though. I believe in the right to bear arms even though I am Canadian, but I can`t help that think if the burglars saw a guy with a shotgun coming at them maybe they also had a right to defend themselves. The right to bear arms was to defend against an oppressive government not to kill burglars.

He was asked to watch the house by that neighbor. If they truly came after him, he had every right to defend himself. He was an idiot for telling the police he was going to kill them though. 1st goal should have been to stop the crime not kill the suspects.

But if its just material goods that will be covered by home owners ensurance the guy has no right to kill them, no one has the right to take another persons live unless they have ruined someone elses.

Sure im for the death penalty but thats only in extreme cases where people have commited murders themselves, kinda an eye for and eye, but not for material goods. This monster should have gone to prison for this, if he had at least given the robbers a chance a surrender then shot them so be it, but it was in cold blood, they didnt see it comming.

I actually live near Pasadena (Seabrook). I go there everyday for my classes, San Jac Central. Anyway, heard about this on the news and I thought, "Whoa, now that`s one hell of a neighbor."

Pasadena is overrun with crime and you really have to watch out for each other if you live there. I think the guy should have stayed in inside, but I can`t help but admire his tenacity to protect his neighbor`s property.

The criminal came at him despite him having a gun in clear view. The criminal trespassing onto his property and approaching him in an aggressive fashion is what caused his death.

What was Horn supposed to do? Stand there and let the criminal take his gun and shoot him with it? Going outside onto his own lawn isn`t a crime either, Horn acted in self defense despite willingly putting himself in a dangerous situation.

I think he said that he was going to kill them at first place so the police officers hurry up to the scene instead of taking 45 minutes as they usually do for situations like that.

I know the feeling of being robbed and I think it is disgusting that the cops don`t care more than that about catching the assholes before they run away. I think that they`re just arriving too late on purpose to avoid any contact with the robbers to avoid any risk of being shot. People keep bitching about crime but no problem will be solved if even the cops refuse to stop the criminals because they`re afraid of the risks. But this is their goddamn job for crying out loud.

If they refuse make justice for the citizens, they shouldn`t complain that the citizens start doing it themselves.

And that guy rocked. I don`t say we should shoot every burglar on sight but we should be able to defend our property and then use deadly force if the burglar threatens you for doing it.

if he stopped `em on his lawn it is reasonable to assume they were there to hurt/kill him for being a witness or they were there to rob him next. He`s gone to pieces because any good man would after killing. He was smart enough to see the truth of the reality, and did what he had to when he believed time had run out as they escaped.

i believe most ppl deep down on some level approve of what this guy did. or at least if their house was getting robbed and your neighbor shot them, you would at least be happy about burglars not being able to get into other ppl`s houses or your own house again. but in principle, i think it`s not good to take the law into your own hands. in some situations yes, but others no. and the border between acceptable and unacceptable depends on the individual person`s values, which is very very different in every person. that is why there are laws to standardize the definition of crime and the levels of punishment. same with police, police are supposed to enforce law and catch criminals, not judge or implement punishment. but in a way, i do feel safer with 2 burglars dead. eh.

Ive never had my house been robbed, But imagine all the stuff that they could have done. The very second they decided to go into that house they knew that this could go totally wrong, that something of this magnatuide could happen, they knew it and went anyway. What if people were in the house? Do you think they would have for a second given the option not killed them left and hope to god that there not found out and do not go to jail? In my area as of late there have been break ins and they dont just stop at one house they do several before they pack up and go. So yes this horn guy could have been next on there list and he could have possibly been killed.

i agree that the two robbers were wrong in what they were doing but is robbery justification for the death penalty? i don`t know the full story and we cannot know for certain if the 2 burglars actually attacked Horn. If they did, and he shot them in self defense, I can understand the situation. But I don`t know why they would try to attack someone who is armed with a shotgun when they themselves are not armed (although this is still possible..) Either way, regardless of what happened, the best thing to do would be to wait for the police in my opinion, because they most likely would have been caught with the description that Horn gave the police, and it didn`t seem as though the police were that far away. If Horn actually waited... two lives may have been spared, and some children may still have fathers today.

I`ve seen women get smacked around by men, my girlfriend get shot in the right arm by her ex a few years back, an old man get mugged and pistol whipped in a super market parking lot, drug deals on my street and around town, and to top things off last weekend several people in my apartment building heard a woman come close to getting raped in the hall. If it wasn`t for a Korean across the hall with a hand gun she would have and maybe more. This was not those robbers first crime and it would not be their last. They did that crime with no regard for anyone. Their disregard and lack of respect for people ended their lives. They made a choice to do the crime, had they not they may be around today to do another crime. What do you think they would have done with that crowbar had somebody been in the house? Do you think they would have just took off? I don`t think so. They got what was coming to them.

I am hardly one to let people get hurt or abused. Last week on the bus I saw a drunk heavy set woman threatening a young passenger that smiled at her outlandish behavior. So seeing no one doe anything I tapped the drunk girl on the shoulder and told her that what she was doing was unacceptable. Not even the Bus driver helped. I don`t believe in living in a world of intimidation. So I did something. I didn`t threaten violence or anything as I also tried to understand the person that was doing the threatening.

So for all you saying you would do the same thing. When you see someone outnumbered in a bar fight help the person. When you see a homeless person think of a solution. When you talk about crime please come up with something better than a foolish statement like oh they deserved to die or lock them up and throw away the key.

nova1999, in answer to you above comments to me, the news reported that he knew that neighbor on the day that this actually happened and that he had asked them to watch the house. The full 911 tape had not been aired at that time.

Also, when Joe Horn refers to September 1st, he is refering to the date that Texas gun laws were changed in favor of the victim. The new law does not require you to be backed into a corner before you can use deadly force. Florida, were I live, also passed similar legislation recently.

I don`t think these two guys deserved to die for stealing, but I guess if the police don`t get there in time what other way is there to stop someone? The biggest factor if I was a juror on this case would be whether Joe warned the two to stop before he fired. If they charged or ran at him, then they deserved to die.

Anyway, I see both sides of the argument on whether it was justified or not. I tend to believe these guys were probably career criminals being they were in their 30`s, so society was probably bettered by their deaths.

They didn`t, to say they ever have or would is complete speculation. Also very good chances they knew that the people were out of town, I don`t think they were Trick or Treating door to door with their tire irons champ..

The only justification for Joe`s actions would be the men drawing their own weapons, or charging him with the tire irons (Which they likely wouldn`t seeing as he had a shotgun). Now instead of running out and confronting them, he ran out pumped with adrenaline and shouted "YOU`RE DEAD" and shot them to death..

Oh and it`s obvious he had a specific agenda going in to it..

So judging from the comments above, a large % of American`s support punishing crimes that "might" happen.
All of a sudden we see posts that because these two broke in and stole material items, they must also be rapists and murderers.
Hopefully an investigation will tell us if the men were shot in the front or the back so we do know if Horn`s life was actually in danger.

Regardless, Aids is right in stating that death as a punishment for stealing is a medieval punishment, supported only by the very types of governments you American`s like to feel so superior too over in the Middle East.

Even if part of me thinks they should all be lined up and shot, that`s not how we do things. It`s not what we as North American`s stand for and it`s not what we want the world to see us as. Murder over a fucking robbery makes us no better then those we claim to be better then. How can we justify the concept of being a greater civilization when SO many people are filled with glee at the concept that two men were killed over something like Robbery.

Now you tell me to show you for certain they were only robbing and weren`t going to do anything else? Well tell me for certain that they were! Perhaps they were generally decent people who did get involved time to time with non violent criminal activity. They find out a guy is going out of town so they rob his house.. then they get blown away by a fucking redneck. Now that might sound like I`m trying to hard to be optimistic, but the fact is I`m simply looking at the situation like the good decent people we claim to be are supposed to. We have a law system and a court system. This man played Judge, Jury and Executioner this day and weather we feel it was a good call or not. The fact is, it`s not how we`re supposed to operate.

Normally on seeing this video I might have thrown a random joke out about it, because in the long run I don`t really give that much of a shit about this incident. It was the reaction of about 100 people on this site that truly disgusted me. How can you be proud to be American if this is what defines you? Perhaps I`ve spent to much time trying to separate American citizens from their government.. hopes that they were actually decent people. I may have been wrong!
