That wasnt actually close to the ground, he pulled his chute at about 1500 feet which is perfectly safe and still gives you plenty of leeway. And im not just talking out my ass on this subject i have sky dived 3 times at 12,500 feet.

But you do Jile, you ARE talking out of your ass. He pulled his chute probably at around just a bit lower than 3000ft, he probably was under a fully inflated canopy at around 2500-2400ft. How do I know, cause I`m the guy that`s being filmed. I have 180 jumps, which isn`t an awfull lot, but any skydiver knows you`d have to be a pretty stupid skydiver to pull at 1500ft for a multitude of various reasons. If anyone wants to hear them I would be happy to explain.

The fact that you did 3 skydive jumps which probably were all tandem jumps or student jumps at best, makes you know jack shit about skydive so don`t pretend you know.

Is this maneuver extremely hard to do?

Muufley, I would like to know the reasons. I have seen, cliff/base jumpers mind you, deploy chutes at 100ft.

Awesome video. I`ve always wanted to go skydiving, but I don`t have the balls.

I`m content as of now to live the experience through these videos.

Nice upload Muufley, thanks for sharing. I get scared just thinking of the sensation of free fall.

Haha lol, yeah my crotch does get filmed alot, that`s because the cameraman was concentrating on trying to dock with my foot so naturally he has to fly a bit lower.
Alright now, here`s some explaining for the curious ones:

Sitflying is the basic flying position of freefly, instead of falling on our belly`s we sit on the air. from that point we do stand-up, head-down, backflying, etc.. . To fly like this isn`t that easy, it took me nearly 100 jumps to be able to fly and manouvre in that position. It`s like balancing yourself on a powerfull airstream, letting the wind flow besides you and use that to steer and to control fallspeed at the same time.

Why can`t you pull at 1500ft?

First it isn`t allowed, max allowed height of being under a fully inflated canopy is 2300ft here in Belgium otherwise you can get grounded and not jump for a while. The USPA (United States Parachute Association) probably has a similar rule. This also means that you have to initiate deployment procedure at about 3000-2700ft cause that procedure can take about 300ft to sometimes 600ft before the canopy is fully open.
This presents a serious danger when deploying at 1500ft: every skydiver has an AAD (Automatic activation device) which automatically launches your reserve parachute at 800ft (1200ft for students) if by that time your main parachute hasn`t deployed yet. So if you would pull at 1500ft substract 600ft from that and you would get awfully close to that 800ft AAD-hight. That would result in a two-out situation (resreve+main parachute) which is potentially lethal.
Another good reason why 1500ft is dangerous is cause you simply wouldn`t have enough time left if you needed to release your main parachute and then use your reserve.

The comparison between base jumpers and skydivers also doesn`t count. It`s correct that base jumper jump from altitudes as low as 100ft (mind you that`s pretty extreme low even in base-jumping terms, Belgian low-record is about 70ft) The material base jumpers use is pretty different from that of skydivers. I`m not a base jumper but know a few of them and their parachutes are designed to go open very fast. A base jumper falls only for a very short while in which time he doesn`t reach the same fallspeeds a skydiver would (120mph). If I were to skydive with a base parachute and deploy it it would just simply break my back or the chute would explode on opening.
There is however a possebility of using base-parachutes for skydive, base-jumpers who jump from like 2000ft cliffs in Norway use again a different parachute configuration than that of low altitude base jumpers. They open a bit slower but still faster then skydive parachutes. But using those parachutes for skydiving isn`t allowed.

For the poeple who are interested in skydive and want to try it here`s what to do:
go to www.dropzone.com and click "dropzones" to find a skydive club in your neighbourhood, make an appointment for a skydive course (either static or AFF) start, succeed and then get licensed to jump. It`s a bit of an investment cause it isn`t cheap but it`s well worth the costs.

Expensive as you start out the more dives you do the cheaper it gets ;)

Even if you only do a tandem its something everyone should try once.

I convinced my younger brother to do it many years ago and hes now an instructor and also in a 4-way sequential team.
