Ted Talks: Help Stop the Next Pandemic

Accepting his 2006 TED Prize, Dr. Larry Brilliant talks about how smallpox was finally eradicated from the planet. In a conversational style that belies the deadly seriousness of his subject, he describes the dangers of pandemic disease, and offers a solution in his dramatic TED Prize wish, a plan to use the Internet to help prevent the next pandemic. This is one of the best TED talks I have seen. I seldom see such a moving tribute to humanity. It really shows what amazing things we can accomplish when we CHOOSE to. And shows with clear relief just how much vested interests keep the fucked up things exactly the way they are. We can solve the problems, but the vested interests need to allow the positive changes, even when those changes are a threat to revenue. Human life, environment, vs. revenue.

Strange, concept of when he says "containment" of a disease, he means you will have absolutely no rights to a human being, except to possibly be still be alive in a air tight cell/hospital... not for national security, but for endangering public health reasons.

But truly this man is great. He demonstrates great leadership skills and has probably saved millions of people throughout the course of his life. Damn, what a bar-raiser

knifes, i had to vote you down, if im infected by say bird flu, and my infection can spread to millions of people. I would MUCH rather be sealed in a box then killed.

my life is important to me. I lean left in most cases, and the rights of the one are VERY important, but the rights of 6 billion others override mine.

if I run around with a bomb on my back strapped there against my will, you have a right to shoot me in the head to kill me, prevent your own death. I would do the SAME.

It is amazing what we can accomplish as a species; with all the races and cultures working towards a common goal with a common enemy.

I do like that he at least PROPOSED a fix, instead of just pointing to it and saying "fix it."

And i never realized how much we`re protected by such communities. I waved away SARS and bird flu because it never moved. Quick containment seemed to have worked.

I guess that`s the goal; the average person should never be bothered by them.

The comments above mine are a fine example of the reasons I choose SpikedHumor over other similar sites. Among the loud baboons there are still civil and smart individuals, capable of proper communication. Internet and humanity might still have a chance.
