Powerful story.

And you could see that his disorder was knocking at the door during the entire speech becoming progressively worse but he pushed through like a champ.

Not many sappy stories get me interested or inspired but he did a good job.

My dad had an extreme case of depression, bordering on losing control, with suicide attempts in the double digits. They put him on experimental pills, had him do psych excersizes, but when they said he was a candidate for electroshock, he flatly refused.

He`s since stopped taking the pills, and functions normally. He was so scared of the torturous idea that he began repressing it himself. Today he`s totally functional and takes no pills.

I take that back, he still has a slight obsession with the lottery, but that`s a small thing to deal with.

the really sad part about this guy`s story is that he was treated by biogically oriented psychiatrists using biologically oriented treatments. It`s clear from his story that he had issues from childhood that came back to haunt him and affect the way he was living his life, but did he go see a psychologist, someone who is trained to assess the impact of these things on depression, anxiety, etc.?

No.

Being medically trained himself, he assumed to some extent that the problem was in his "organs" instead of in his sense of self, his sense of purpose, the meaning that he maade of his life. These are not things you learn about in med school, and they may not sound "Scientific," but they are the building blocks of depression and anxiety. Shame he couldn`t have gone to see a good psychologist who could have helped him make sense of all this. Luckily for him, the shocks helped snap him out of it, but he went through a lot of shit first. Poor guy.

Unfortunately, medical "science" too often reiterates - rather than rejects - what religion and superstition originated.

Where religion appeals to "God" and "sin", medicine invokes the "natural", "normal" and somatic.

And so the witch hunts and inquisitions continue (oh, if only Torquemada had had electroshock "therapy" to work with...)

So, so many folks I`ve known with similar problems as this guy have been helped with:

1.Sex

and

2. Pot

...but then we have those damn witch hunts that get in the way...

Wow.. could totally see that he was braking near the end. Very quick finish to what looked like a very emotional and difficult speech. And that guy must have super determination fairplay. Some of us don`t realize that depression gets deeper than maybe finishing your girlfriend or whatever.

5/5
