Different cultures have always been misunderstood throughout history. Women wearing burkas wear them because they believe it is right. A lot of muslim women dont want filthy horny men checking them out all day.
In america women were oppressed and thought of as inferior to man. Over time those women stood up for a change and they won more rights. If muslim women are truly passionate about shedding their burkas and dressing like western women then they would stand up and fight for their rights. Women can be martyrs for their own cause too. There are a lot of women out there in the muslim world, dont think of them as a weak force. Everyone faces tough times to overcome intolerance.
It is not our place to force what we think is right upon other cultures, especially when our own culture isn`t perfect.

The way humans think of themselves, each other, their purpose, and their lives is no short of disgusting. You can claim freedom to live as you choose all you like, it doesn`t help that you are almost completely wrong about everything you say, think and do.

Sure they can dress that way, but they`ve missed more than a few points about life. Sucks to be them.

hOser, it was wrong for us to oppress women then it is wrong for them to oppress women now. The problem is not that these women are choosing to wear these burkka`s it is that they are being forced to wear them. The bible also says women should cover their heads but most Christians don`t force women to cover themselves on pain of death by stoning. We can and should say things like this are wrong and we condemn them. In some of these places they can`t see a doctor, they can`t drive, they can`t even go out on their own without a male.
Vote Edwards in the primary if you want any chance of a future.
You have a right to choose but they can`t choose when the society makes it illegal to choose any thing else.

I agree with you h0ser...we cant sit here condemn things that we dont know anything about...maybe they like wearing burkas. I didnt like Bill`s response either that, "ofcourse they like em, they`re brainwahsed." Well I think our women are brainwashed to wear those tight little low cut jeans with their ass crack and thongs all showing and those skimpy little blouses with their breast hanging all out. I think they`re both extremes but if they dont have a problem with our women dressing like that then we shouldnt either.

its tough, I dont hate the people of these Middle Eastern countries but it baffles me how so many people could bend over backwards for an almost medieval outlook on religion.

Gee Hoser, get your facts straight please. You realize that Burkas are not an ancient tradition but rather a new development set in by the current militia in control right? Surely you know that much. Now, you say that they WANT to wear these Burkas. Hmmm WANT to? Do you really want to tell them what they think? They have enough people doing that in their own countries.

And thanks for the intellectual generalization of men; "horny and filthy", that`s spot on. I think women are pure and don`t want sex and don`t like the male figure one bit either correct? I think we have rapists and molestors here, lets see how many American women want to cover up themselves in burkas. Don`t talk out of your ass. Your pseudo-intellectual approach only says one thing that I can agree with, and that is that culture have always been misunderstood. The only problem is that you too lack a lot of perspective in that matter as well.

If you think that the people in the Muslim world have a general concensus on anything then you are a complete idiot. The region is considered in turmoil because of the many many sects fighting over fundamental issues, and guess what wins those fights? BRUTE FORCE. So when you tell me that the women loves to wear burkas as a personal choice, let me say to you this. There are some women there who have lost multiple sons because they became suicide bombers. And when asked how they felt, their burka covered faces claimed that they would give every last son to the cause and that if their sons did not become suicide bombers, they would likely disown them. You tell me that`s the voice of a rational/free thinking society.
You think they are products of themselves over there?

You think that ultra male dominated society allows for many women to voice their opinions when it is lawful for their husbands to kill their wives justly or unjustly (well when it comes to male murdering females, it`s always just so nevermind)? The last woman who I saw speak out in the Muslim world was killed by her husband for being more successful and love than he (Citing CNN). And he got off with I think a few months in jail.

There are guys over there who have never shown their wives to their BEST friends out of fear that they would rape and impregnate her on the very spot they meet. Are women such divine objects that render men beasts to a point that you can`t even allow your wife to show her face?

In the end, no one has their hands clean in this situation. You can blame the US for all the shit that they did in the past, and I don`t have the time or the room to list them, but lets just say you reap what you sow. But please don`t be a moron frankweed, and think that the Iranians and Iraqis are saints defending their homeland from the evil American empire. It`s not that simple, the instant you get lazy and see the world as black and white is the instant things get messy. Fundamentalism is and always has been a means to violence and bigotry.
