The Bell X-1

14/10/1947, Captain Charles “Chuck” Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than sound. Yeager breaks the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 "Glamorous Glennis", named after his wife. He was able to reach 670-mph or Mach 1.015 at Muroc Dry Lake, California.

This was back in the 40s and i think the Blackbird (very fuckin fast about mach 3ish i think) came out in the 60s and with supersonic planes reaching about mach 9-10 already makes you think what crazy shit there gonna make next...

still cant help thinking of better uses of my tax money like strapping Dubya to one of the above and crashing it..

yeah 5/5 for the vid but that dropped to 3.5/5 after technical points analysis for the music (feel like an olympic gymnastics judge). Couldnt even hear what the narrator said so basically just wasted 3 and half minutes watching a vid of and out-dated `rocket ship` video with incredibly outdated and needless to say gay techno

The music is from the Australian movie `Gallipoli`. Great movie with Mel Gibson in one of his first ever major roles. An Aussie classic!! Perhaps inappropriate for this clip but go see the movie on dvd.

The Bell X1 was a direct rip-off of a British design which would have flown first and broken the sound barrier months earlier except that the Americans pressured the British govt to halt their project.

The British also designed the "flying tail". If the Bell prototype had flown without it, it would have crashed since the standard tail surfaces become ineffective at high speed.

i believe it went more like the British had the technology but the gov`t thought it wasn`t important. they never tested it and so the Americans get the glory.
