Sparta probably would have lasted longer if they didnt treat the Helots like absolute shit.

Pisses me off that they make Xerxes sound like an ass all the time. It was Athens that initiated the conflict between Persia and Greece by inciting a rebellion in one of Persia`s dominions(Egypt I believe) so you can`t blame Xerxes for wanting to punish Athens. Also the Persian kings didn`t use slaves but instead chose to pay their workers. All in all Persia was better than Greece ever was. Still Spartans kick soo much Ass.

I would suggest the book "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield if you like the whole ideology of Sparta or just history of Sparta. I read it and was blown away by their customs, discipline, and just general way of thinking. It makes 300 look like child`s play. Great read if you have the time.

I read History of the Peloponnesian Wars, written by Thucydides, an Athenian aristocrat.

it wasnt exactly Athens that started making trouble. It was Athens` traders and such that set up a city(cant remember name), which was later conquered by Persia, then ruled by Xerxes` father. and so the city rose up against Persia, and asked for Athens` help. When the city that was set up by Athens was lost, the new king Xerxes wanted revenge, and he attacked Athens and burned the city. Thats why u see a burned city in the show 300. that was why Athens` asked for Sparta`s help, bringing them into the war.
plus there werent only 300 ppl at Thermopylae. It was 1300. The other 1000 were one of Sparta`s loyal ally.

i believe there`s another documentary about the battle of thermopylae on spikedhumor...

"The combined Greek force included 300 Spartans, 4,900 additional heavy infantry from Arcadia, Corinth, Thespiae, Phocis, Tegea, Mantinea, Mycenae, Phleious, and Thebes, an unspecified amount from the Opuntian Locrians and a number of slaves (each hoplite could be expected to have at least one lightly armed retainer)[4]."

- Wiki and yes, if you dont like thoose facts go complain to Herodotus.

[4] Herodotus, Histories, 7.202

What also should be mentioned is that spartans were heavily armored as mentioned in this clip. That compared to the Persians who, I believe, whom most were lucky to have any armor at all - wich they didn`t for the most part.

"They knew no trade but war". So they got their food, weapons, and education from where? I`m not a big fan of over exaggeration.

They got there food from making the helots work the fields/crops .If they didnt reach a certain quoter they would either be killed or starve, but if they produced over there required amount of food the spartans would let the farmer keep the surpless food to use as he (or his family) saw fit.
I think there where some spartans who did make furniture and cutlery often from wood, I know the helots did most of that for a fact.
They did have both spartan and helot blacksmith`s (thus explaining the weapons).
And as for their education...It was mostly word of mouth (from what I remember) they did use some scripture (I think....dont quote me on that).

as a plus note. the Spartans once and a while would kill a helot for no reason just to make sure that they would remain in their place. from what I`ve read on Sparta is that it`s built on slavery and cruelty. i still have to admire the state for it`s toughness and warrior ethic, but i can`t deny it is one of the cruelest of the ancient world. i enjoyed 300 the film because i think it`s opened a door for laymen to read more on the Spartans and therefore understand more on what democracy was built on. it`s amazing how the women in Sparta had more freedom of speech than their Athenian counterpart but still none the less, also lived a harsh life like their men.
