Wow, amazing.

I thought you`d just be able to see some smokey patches on the land but you can see the smoke trails go quite a fair ways out above the ocean.

The fires just barely missed my house, it has been raining ash a lot, the air is dense with smoke, and it has been really hot/dry. It`s all pretty intense... and I will post some up close pictures later if people are interested.

I swear, I have been coughing like an 80 year old chain smoker since Sunday, but o well, fires happen here every year... but just not this bad

EDIT:
I would just like to add that I in no way live in a rich million dollar house nor do I live in a rich neighborhood- I am just a regular person living in California. In other words, I know many associate really rich people (a "majority" of whom are white) with southern California, but just remember, they make up a very small portion of our population. My opinion is that the reason why they keep making the news is because it is a real spectacle to see a very expensive mansion turning to ashes. Also, I believe it is because the before and after photos/videos of fires burning down mansions are more contrasting than your average Joe`s home (i.e. the news channels are trying to gain more publicity so that they can get higher ratings and more people watching them as "the news unfolds").

Generally speaking, we don`t usually back burn but we do have a lot of fire brakes all over our surrounding hills. Back burning is a great idea, but is very dangerous with our Santa Ana winds since they tend to spread the fire all over the place. Luckily, the winds have been dying down (from 100mph to a manageable 10mph) so we have been able to back burn a bit to help fight the fire.

Also, please remember that every place on Earth has its pros and cons (both man-made and natural) that you just have to live with if you want to make it your home; and for us, this is just one of those cons. What can I say, everyone chooses their own battles in life, whether they know it or not. But, to be a bit more light hearted and optimistic on the matter, I am sure that the fires will go out soon, because I know everyone really just wants to breathe easy and move on with their lives.

Rich or not, poor or not, my prayers go out to those who have suffered any type of loss because of any of the fires; as do my sincerest thanks and gratitude go out to all of those who have helped and managed to keep on doing all that they can do to try to gracefully/peacefully end this nightmare.

And a little informational side note, as of 10/25/07:
"Twenty-three fires have scorched 472,478 acres (738 square miles), an area roughly three-quarters of the size of Rhode Island."

I apologize for writing so much- I just felt that some things needed to be said. Also, thank you finding the time to somehow manage to make it through reading my little rant.

i am probably going to voted down for this but. why the fuck do they build million dollar houses there when every year at the same area fires start. WHY!?!?!?

aparently after doing some research, they dont even back burn? and put firebreaks in???? WTF? every fire season here in australia we backburn so that the fire slows down so we can put it out.

and also??? mr bush! YOU ARE A FUCKWIT. ohhh noes! critical ALERT lets have a huge evacuation!@$#@!!#$!, ummmm mr bush mc faggotshoes.... it happens every year! you are just doing it because of what happend with katrina.

/end rant

Come to sunny California! You`d better have fire, flood, earthquake, and mud-slide insurance though.

I live about 20 minutes from these fires.... the damage is immense. The sky is filled with smoke and my car was covered in ashes. Crazy site to see from space, but crazier site to see 50 foot flames that jump highways. My heart goes out to those who have lost property, loved ones, and animals. 5/5

I live about 2 hours away from these to the east. I have a lot of friends that are being evacuated and or missing work/school becasue of this. Its a Huge deal As of last night it has burned an area larger then New York City and this morning they said it was twice as large as Chicago.

America has to take some advice from us Australian`s on this one.
Our native aboriginies have used backburning techniques
for centurys.

^Torn...ur right but backburning also diverts the path of a fire aswell, regardless of the wind factor.

I think this is safe to say that
"fighting fire WITH fire" can be taken literally.

HOORAY FOR THE "GOOGLE" TELESCOPE !!!!

EDIT: i get voted down to -5 for good advice...and u vote up some dick who says "fires suck" whoa, thats heavy shit man...deep,deep thinking right there.
was mine really that negative??.....BURN THEN!!, SEE IF I CARE!

Man.... am I the only one that is tired of hearing all this bullshit about "how big the fire was" or "omg people are dieing." Give me something that is not death for entertainment. Please. (Yes I know that I did click on it.. but I`m mainly talking about other videos that SHOULD be put up instead of this... and I`m wondering about your opinion on this.)

its a little different out here. trust me, our firefighters aren`t dumb, and they use all kinds of techniques. but the terrain is different, the vegetation is different. most of all, this is caused by the santa ana wind phenomenon. flames are up to 100 feet high, with unpredictable gusts in speed and direction up to 100mph. i watch a fire from castiac throw embers 20 miles away into Stevenson ranch, which started a whole new brush fire
