Comcast Blocks Internet Traffic

NEW YORK - Comcast Corp. actively interferes with attempts by some of its high-speed Internet subscribers to share files online, a move that runs counter to the tradition of treating all types of Net traffic equally.

The interference, which The Associated Press confirmed through nationwide tests, is the most drastic example yet of data discrimination by a U.S. Internet service provider. It involves company computers masquerading as those of its users.

If widely applied by other ISPs, the technology Comcast is using would be a crippling blow to the BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella file-sharing networks. While these are mainly known as sources of copyright music, software and movies, BitTorrent in particular is emerging as a legitimate tool for quickly disseminating legal content.

The principle of equal treatment of traffic, called "Net Neutrality" by proponents, is not enshrined in law but supported by some regulations. Most of the debate around the issue has centered on tentative plans, now postponed, by large Internet carriers to offer preferential treatment of traffic from certain content providers for a fee.

Comcast's interference, on the other hand, appears to be an aggressive way of managing its network to keep file-sharing traffic from swallowing too much bandwidth and affecting the Internet speeds of other subscribers.

Comcast, the nation's largest cable TV operator and No. 2 Internet provider, would not specifically address the practice, but spokesman Charlie Douglas confirmed that it uses sophisticated methods to keep Net connections running smoothly.

"Comcast does not block access to any applications, including BitTorrent," he said.

Douglas would not specify what the company means by "access" — Comcast subscribers can download BitTorrent files without hindrance. Only uploads of complete files are blocked or delayed by the company, as indicated by AP tests.

But with "peer-to-peer" technology, users exchange files with each other, and one person's upload is another's download. That means Comcast's blocking of certain uploads has repercussions in the global network of file sharers.

Comcast's technology kicks in, though not consistently, when one BitTorrent user attempts to share a complete file with another user.

Each PC gets a message invisible to the user that looks like it comes from the other computer, telling it to stop communicating. But neither message originated from the other computer — it comes from Comcast. If it were a telephone conversation, it would be like the operator breaking into the conversation, telling each talker in the voice of the other: "Sorry, I have to hang up. Good bye."

its been happening for a long time do a google search on traffic shaping, so far you can get around it most of the time by encryption so they cant read the headers etc... to detect it as p2p.

FUCK

Guys, think about it, it's only a matter of time before the Internet IS owned and regulated.
Of course they couldn't start the internet already regulated; no one could have predicted the phenomenal unprecedented growth and use of the internet. Look at the types of sites that exist today (like this one)... with people sharing more truth on peer-to-peer networks and these sites than the entire pre-internet history. Of-fucking-course they're frantically trying to control the internet, and unless the revolution comes first, the internet WILL be owned whether we like to or not.

And these fuckers KNOW that the internet WILL lead to the revolution and the complete over-throwing of all the corrupt owners of this country and the whole world as the internet grows to countries that are oppressed and dominated. Look at China with its FACIST restricting of millions of websites to its all citizens. OF COURSE if the people saw how prosperous/free/happy people in other countries were and how they’re fucking slaves of the rest of the world they'd COMPLETELY overthrow their government. And if you even talk about anything of the sort or post something online, I’m safe to say they’d fucking kill you, to them what’s another Chinaman, they all do the same shit… there are over a BILLION of them, to them they’re probably just alleviating the over-population.

They (those less than 1% of the world’s population who OWN the fucking world) are scared of what the internet is doing. Imagine if all the videos and things WE (the new generation) sees/reads online were shown on the fucking TV... all the stupid old people who DON'T use the internet but who ARE the voters who sustain these fuckers would be like HOLY SHIT the WORLD IS FUCKED and corrupt.

And now we have motherfucking-Comcast-piece-of-shit pulling a stunt like this. And you know what, they're not even going to be challenged... of course, granted, it's going to be reported... like it is now, of what they're doing, just as typical ‘news’... but what next.... WE're just going to continue doing what we're doing and all of a sudden next thing you know a little while down the road you go to P2P and you know what you get? A big "FUCK YOU" as the opening message, and it'll be too late.

All mass media ever to come and revolutionize the world, is now OWNED... Newspapers, magazines, direct mail, billboards, bus signs, RADIO and TELEVISION... OWNED. What you think they'd actually fucking allow the Internet (their worst enemy ever) to prosper indefinitely? If there isn't a legit revolution... then all I can say is:

=[

lets go to the Comcast corporation building and burn it down.then lets lynch those fuckers for pulling a stunt like that.
pretty sure that after that no company would bother with taking over the net.

One thing they don't realize is that when things go back to just e-mail and (soon to be censored) web pages....A LOT of people will just give up the internet all together and Comcast & other companies will lose a shit load of customers.

HOLY SHIT.

This is HUGE news.
We as internet people have to do something to put this bullshit to an end.

I was just planning on switching from my shitty bellsouth dsl to comcast, but, now I'll reconsider.

NET NEUTRALITY FOR THE WIN.

I'm serious though. It is only a matter of time before the net becomes regulated.

That would be the travesty of the century.

"Comcast's interference, on the other hand, appears to be an aggressive way of managing its network to keep file-sharing traffic from swallowing too much bandwidth and affecting the Internet speeds of other subscribers."

WHAT THE FUCK, if im paying for my service i wanna do whatever the hell i want with it...if that means watching porn or downloading hundreds of songs...

MY GUESS ON WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE INTERNET: i believe that the internet will become A LOT like TV, you will sign up with a host like Verizon, Comcast, or Quest and be given a set of webiites that CORPORATIONS have either bought out or that they created...

these channel like websites will have all sorts of shit like videos exactly like spikedhumor does...however you will probably be nickled and fucking dimed with EVERYTHING like the cell phones...you wont be able to freely upload and download, that will be controlled by the channels and once again you will be nickel and dimed on it...you will be given access to website channels like the weather, news, email (probably along the lines of myspace), videos, educational website, and a few other things...servers will probably be bought out by corporations or completely overshadowed with a new hosting technology...and people that want to create websites will probably have to pay a fortune to do so, whether that will be the huge tax the government is going to put on it or whether the corporations are going to start charging outrageous prices...

You know I'm getting pretty sick of all you guys pirating peoples hard work. It's just really horrible when people like George Lucas can't make 1 billion dollars off a movie and makes only 700 million. All because you guys keep stealing his work.Poor George Lucas.

I find is funny how the big companies can come up with these figures of lost earnings due to piracy. I mean, how can you know? I mean, it's a due overblown estimate based on what they wanted to make off the movie / program whatever as far as I see. It's far easier to have a product fail and go 'oh, poor us, piracy has raped our most honourable business'.

For companies to activately target P2P users they'd also have to go after Youtube users, Spikedhumor users and the likes too.

And big companies wonder why their networks get targetted by nasty hackers.

Bullshit, no company loses money over piracy. before the internet I didn't have games, Music or Videos...I used to stay going to my friends because I couldn't afford them.

Fuck you comcast, I'm not going to stay wasting my time litsening to the radio, for my favorite song to come up and record it on tape. No fucking way.
I'll spit on your graves before you fuckers can do that.
