In the earlier days of the history of the Strowger Automatic telephone dial system, both the vertical and rotary motions of all central office switches were directly controlled by dial impulses. It was not until the year 1899 that the rotary motion became automatic. The 10 digit automatic was made in both wall and desk versions.
