Japanese Kid on Piano

I know he's Japanese, but jeez... x_x; The piece is Chopin Valse No.14 in Em. The kid is about 8 years old.

Absolutely Amazing. I've been wanting to take up piano lessons, but after watching this, I'm slightly discouraged.

Same here. But I think we're approaching this in the wrong way. What we need is to get adopted by some Japanese parents!

But can he only play well when he's drunk?

from what i know about the japanese, it'll be really really really really good, or really really really bad or he'll just pass out from the alcohol.

Simply amazing technique for such a young kid.

Asians are good at playing piano with perfect technique but their playing is lifeless, like a robot. FYI the greatest piano players are Russian/European, not Asian

Somewhat agree, misulancer. Except not sure it's a racial issue.

This kid's technique is great - but the expression is obviously undeveloped. He'd be better suited to performing Mozart, where flawless technique and child-like innocence make perfect pairing for child prodigies.

This kid is only 8 years old!! Why are you guys complaining about his lack of expression and its lifelessness? I bet I would be hearing none of that had this been an English kid.

I feel sorry for him, because kids in that position aren't usually playing because they love to do it. They are usually forced to play through disipline and parental pressure. I'd rather be a happy nobody doing what I love, than a manic depressive somebody who is only doing it because it's all I know.

^ bkVII, the fact that an artist is a young savant doesn't shield him from a critical analysis

And there are superstars of technique from all nationalities - I didn't even notice this kid was not English. Many of today's classical soloists were maestros at a young age - strong on technique early on, and developed artistic sensitivity as they grew up.

i gotta confess that i was groomed on the piano like this too at an early age heh. a lot of you are criticizing young people like this about not being expressive and all, but you have to remember he's going to grow up too. when you're that young, sometimes you just don't understand the kind of feelings it would take to really express what a composer was trying to say in his music. the advantage that kids like this have is that when they ARE old enough to start understanding music on that level, they'll already have their basic technical skills completely mastered and will be infinitely freer in experimenting with all the music available in the world, instead of being so limited later in life by trying to develop chops while at the same time discovering music. it would really depend on his teachers on helping him to develop a full appreciation of the kind of music he's being trained to play (some are shitty and just showcase, some really put opening the kid's mental horizons as a top priority, even if it means sending him to a better teacher).
