He was clearing the gun. In other words he was making sure nothing was left in the chamber such as the last shell or last part of the belt.

With it's ridiculously high rate of fire, I wouldn't be surprised if the MG42 explodes after firing only half the amount of bullets the M60 did due to overheating.

But the MG42 is still a great MG.
