My little brother has a form of savant. Its really neat, he is awesum with dates. If you were to ask him what day October 4th, 1978 was, he could tell you if it was a sunday, thursday, whatever day it is. He also has some other neat little tricks like an internal clock. He never wears a watch and can tell you the time of day within 3-4 minutes. It truly is an amazing gift of the mind.

"10 minutes to Wopner, yeah." LMFAO. This dude is too advanced for our time. Although he has certain limitations, his brain has far surpassed the majority in terms of retention. 5/5

So although I agree that most savants can't appreciate most of the knowledge they learn, like levelord said.

I got the impression that he was more...sentient? (thats probably the wrong word) but he seemed more aware of his surroundings on "our" terms if you know what i mean. Like he really seemed like a normal person to some degree. 5/5

I hope is father doesn't pass away anytime soon =(

Everything that you read, see or experience is stored in your brain. We probably need to be under hypnosis to remember things that you thought you forgot, but if you do you remember every little detail.

For those interested:

The brain is very flexible and each brain cell can change it's function relatively easily.

The brain is basically an information processing plan. There isn't a computer in the world that can process the amount of raw data a brain can. The simple act of walking requires the brain to process all voluntary movement, balance, obstacles and the environment. This doesn't even include the even more complex process of decision making involved in figuring out where you want to go.

In an autistic person the brain centers for facial recognition and social behavior switch function. In the case of a person being savant the parts of the brain used social interaction change role and either help in memory retention, mathematical calculation or spacial processing.

Because the brain is relatively flexible an autistic person can learn to adapt but it will never be on the same level we can, because our brains develop with those social processing centers automatically where as an autistic person inherently does not have those center of the brain develop.

^^ Honestly it really isn't the doctors fault. We are just barely beginning to learn how the brain works. When he was diagnosed autistic brain research was in it's infancy.

You can't blame doctors for not having all the information.

I'm just glad the parents loved him enough to give him a chance. Ultimately it's up to the parents and what they can handle. Many in their situation would have not done the same and that is what I respect about them.

As amazing as this guy is it still takes a lot to be able to take care of him everyday. While his social skills probably have evolved he still does not function as independently as we do.
