I think it is a Deus ex machina... The eagles weren't in any part of the story (besides Gwaihir saving Gandalf), and even that part is only mentioned in one sentence. They came out of nowhere to save the day, I think that was a little "ehhhh"-ish. If you get my drift. Tolkein was a genius, but I disagreed with the eagles and the scouring of the shire. they just didn't fit.

the whole point of the book is triumpt and endurance....an unlikley creature, that really does not do much in the world, carrying the ring on foot through all he had to endure to save the world and have peice for everyone...

its a message and an ideal....to simply have the eagles carry them would defeat the whole point of the story....story telling is not about linear reason, its about telling an interesting story, and lord of the rings does that with the ideal of a helpless creature going through hell and enduring all he must to save the entire planet.

and on a second note....that was pretty fucking funny

there'd be no story if the situation was approached practically. They needed a great story whether it made sense or not. Good video though...in a ideal situation that would have happened in 15 minutes.
