That's the whole stupid bit of the book. Tolkien writes for 1000 pages about them battling to get to Mordor and then pulls out this massive Deus Ex Machina at the to end to save Fordo and Sam. Why didn't they just use the eagles in the first place. It's the same in The Hobbit as well. Bloody stupid.

I agree. Why walk when you have a huge bird? I mean, that was how the wizard rescued them anyway after the ring was destroyed anyway. Those two battles were completely unnecessary.

This isn't a deus ex machina, or even a simple plot hole. The Eagles were unable to go anywhere near Mt. Doom while the Nazgul and the witch-king were flying around. The movies are really great, but they didn't quite relate how terrifying the Nazgul were supposed to be. And whilst they were flying around, crippling their enemies with fear, the Eagles (who were not animals, but a wise race of beings) couldn't go near Sauron and his Nazgul.

Pretty funny clip.
