as far as it being illegal, its not illegal in California as far as I know. In oregon, you can buy a mantis egg (hatches 300 mantises about). You buy them to take care of your garden. It's pretty neat when they hatch.

i actually just caught a preying mantis on my college campus... he was just sitting on the sidewalk so i kept him for a few days before i let him go a bit deeper into the forest...

That and i also found out that if you kill a preying mantis its a 10,000 dollar fine...
