Clever Cricket Catch

Mark Wagh of Nottinghamshire, England. The rule is simple. If you catch the ball over the boundary or step over the boundary in the process of catching the ball, it is NOT out.

Cricket fans - the spelling is correct, it is "Wagh". Not to be confused with the Aussie boys "Waugh". See clip at 1:37.

Shouldn't it not count because he stepped over when he first caught it?

Not sure what the rules say but I believe the act of 'catching' the ball is from when it hits your hands to when you have full control of what you're doing with the ball.

Falling backwards means you don't have full control. 1999 World Cup Semi-final where Herschelle Gibbs drops Steve Waugh in the process of throwing the ball into the air in celebration is a fine example.

Edit: Commentary in that video states you need control over the further disposal of the ball. Some rules also state the ball must be held onto for 3 seconds.

Hmm why is this such an uncommon event? Take basketball for instance you cannot step over the boundry and hold the ball at the same time that's why u see players jumping out and sending the ball in all the time. Doesn't take a gifted player to make that play. I don't see why it is such an amazing thing when it happens in cricket.

^^ because the ball is much smaller and less easier to handle, and its just not a matter of having the ball in your hand for a few secs and throwing it back..its about catching it properly. If you play cricket you will understand how hard it is to catch.

^ And how much it hurts, those balls are fucking hard. Make me wonder why baseball players have gloves when baseballs are soft in comparison.

^ I would assume because of the difference in velocities. When comparing the bats of both sports one might notice that American Baseball bats are denser and more aerodynamic. Combine this with pitch velocity and the varying swing positioning, I think you will find that baseballs do indeed travel faster than cricket balls post-hit.

Of course, now you are going to say "But...F=MA, and the mass of the cricketball is greater due to increased density!" To which I will say "Yes! By about 15%!" Unfortunately, baseballs travel more than 15% faster than cricket balls, creating more force on impact.

And no, projectiles in batted sports do not achieve terminal velocity because of their arcing trajectory.

pffffffff your batters wear full body padding!! And yeah our catchers wear padding too but they take the place of your wickets so I guess this contributes to the fact that B=34%/397.8(xyz) to the 10th of the extraquizical notion of basic physics of biological adaptivity which means in the long run, Americans have bigger dicks than Euros/Aussies.

@tmoore121 brett lee has been clocked to bowl 99.5ish mph, not the fastest ever recorded. Baseballs' fastest is something like 102mph (converted it all to mph so you wouldnt have a metric attack)
Has to be down to the hit i guess. Some cricket batters have been recorded around 160kph
