I'm sure this thing could fly for a very long time, but nothing could fly forever. The mechanics working the propellers would break down eventually, but it would be quite awhile until then.

^I think the point is that it's self sustaining.

Very cool design. 5/5

Wow what a bundle of fun that is, watch it slowly take off, then slowly turn, then slowly turn some more.

Kids will go nuts for this thing.

for once i don't think this technology is going to be used for war. It's more or less a test, or a project if you will to see if they could engineer a self sustaining aircraft so eventually they can put a sweet camera on it and take pictures or possible start using them as satellites. Right now they have gotten them to run for 2 full nights and days without power loss. Also they run them at about 80,000ft and that apparently gives it 2x the power it has from the sun at sea level. If your still wondering this is being tested by nasa to clear up any other confusion of worthlessness lol.

Not until the sun goes down idiots.

Solar power conserves energy, meaning it can still fly at night, and will always fly if it conserves enough energy.

quoted:
UK defence firm Qinetiq, which built the Zephyr unmanned aerial vehicle, said it flew for 54 hours during tests.

The researchers believe it is the first time a solar-powered craft has flown under its own power through two nights.

....
The Zephyr's 54-hour endurance flight will not enter the record books because representatives from the world air sports federation - the FAI - were not notified about the secretive test.

We're talking about 80,000 feet. That's over 15 miles in case you're wondering. At 80,000 ft there ARE no birds, and there ARE no hurricanes. There's nothing in fact, but air and sunlight. The only thing it could possibly be threatened by, is radiation. Seeing as how at that altitude it's closer to the radiation deflected by the earth's EM field and there is a much lower density of air between it and the aircraft. That's still not much of a real threat.
