Why Is Evolution So Unpopular?

My fourth video on atheist-related matters. This video isn't so much about atheism as it is about evolution. I talk about the misconceptions of evolutions and why so many people in America don't believe in it.

I totaly agree with what you are saying. I sometimes wish I could articulate to others my very similar views on this subject as well as you have. Good work Al.

"mistake of nature?" How pessimistic. How about, no matter how improbable it was, humans have evolved to such a level that we can even debate this kind of stuff. I mean... that's pretty cool don't you think?

I often hear the argument that if animals evolved so slowly why don't we dig up more fossils from the "in-between" stages. Anyone have a good answer?

I certainly don't believe in creation, but I'm not entirely sure that evolution is right either. I think that in time, we might a different answer.

^ We do dig up transitory fossils all of the time, but if you stopped following paleontology 60 years ago, you would probably believe we don't.

The only people I've come across who are iffy about evolution are those who don't know anything about it. Learn yourself.

@SnakeIRye, I grew up in a Christian family and never learned evolution. I only recently developed my own views. So I don't have the most unbiased version.

In addition, I never liked biology so its not something I would research on my own.

But perhaps I shall "learn myself," to better round my own knowledge off.

Sorry, but I feel that you did not say anything, or make an argument for ethical behavior. I also feel like you went in a big circle and actually supported the man's belief on evolution taking away from our morality.

He wasn't making an appeal to consequence (purposely) more so an appeal to being human and separating us from the animals. His appeal wasn't that if we teach evolution then our children will kill us all. Rather he was saying there will be no right or wrong consequences if we descended from beasts.

He wasn't trying to dispute the scientific theories behind evolution either rather he was trying to promote his beliefs on where humans get our morality.

Doesn't evolution in a way destroy your moral mandate as well?
If we descend from other species and are the smartest can we not behave like the animals we descend from. What justifies the separation of man's morality and wild beasts'? Humans? God? Nothing?

If you believe we get our morals from knowing the the consequences of our actions doesn't that just give humans a limitless combination of moral behavior or none at all? Can I not use that belief to justify anything? If i feel that if I kill myself the world will have less procrastinators and more will get done can I then kill myself? But then doesn't that justify murder? Why is it wrong to affect other people's lives? Where is the FOUNDATION of your belief?

I'm sorry but I feel your beliefs have no solid ground and that the only way to give it ground is something supernatural which is something you won't believe.

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it."

^ Any human CAN go out and do anything they want. It is our own adherence to a set of morals that stops us. We, as a society, deem what is "right" and "wrong". God does not.
If the only reason someone does not murder/steal/cheat/etc. is because a god tells them too, that is not really being moral. True morality comes from knowing that there is not eternal damnation, but still leading a "good" life.\

"If i feel that if I kill myself the world will have less procrastinators and more will get done can I then kill myself?"

Sure, that is your free choice. Society generally frowns on suicide however.
Also using that logic, lets look at life in terms of religion. If life is just the waiting game before getting into heaven, are we not just wasting time by living? Shouldn't I be justified for killing people for getting them where they are supposed to go quicker?

Bottom line, living within a set of moral values, knowing that life is finite and short is far more moral than living within one because a supernatural father figure tells you too.

And if his argument held any water, us atheists would be wronging people left an right. Generally we are pretty nice people :)

Uhhhhm, this may sound weird. But this is in response to sarysaied.
Are you implying that if I believe in a religion where there is God or gods, but my religion says God/gods did not create life on earth but life on earth was accidental , and my God/gods are only interested in being worshipped and feared by all creatures on this earth ( because it is super-natural and infintely more powerful and while being spiteful and jealous God/gods ) , I do not have any moral mandates ?
Would I be wrong to worship my God/gods ? Since my religion believes that we descended or have evolved from single cellular organisms, and nevertheless very much fear my God/gods ( like Judeo-Christian-Islamic religions, I dare not question where or how my God/gods came to being, as far as I`ve been taught He/they always existed before time ) , would I still be amoral if not outright immoral? Am I condemned to eternal damnation because I don`t believe in your God while I am at it ? Incidentally, my religion also teaches me that my God/gods is the only God/gods and there are no other and I shall not worship any other false God/gods and likeness such as idols. What should I do here ?
I am not sure how your argument for moral mandate can only be fullfilled if and only if there is a creator. Can you enlighten me?
