i love how they forgot to mention how the areas hit by nuclear bombs would remain dangerously radioactive for many decades if not centuries. I still can't believe the INSANE amounts of money the US and Russian governments spent on nuclear weapons and defense. If they had focused that money on space exploration instead of war then they might have had a lunar base,or better schools. Hell, they could have just spent that money and helped third world countries industrialize quicker and environmentally safer.

^ Agreed, and the cold warriors who created that world are still largely the ones who are in control today.

Time for another revolution.

What do you want? This was a very well animated, well informed video aimed at the general public.

By the way, they inherently did mention that radiation stays for a long time when they explained half-life of radiating matter. Their example was for a small amount probably found around regions where fallout is a concern. Of course they don't care about the people inside of that region because those people are dead.

That seemed far more reasonable than the "duck and cover" jokes we make about how our parents were educated. I don't know enough about the science of gamma radiation to be aware if it covered all the bases, but I can certainly tell you one thing.

IT WAS ABOUT 10,000 TIMES MORE GENTLE AND EVEN HANDED THAN THE ALERTS WE GET TODAY ABOUT POSSIBLE TERRORISM INSPIRED BY A GUY WHO HAD SEVERE RENAL ISSUES AND PROBABLY DIED IN A CAVE 5 FUCKING YEARS AGO.

Seriously, watch that, then go to that government terrorism website. Chalk and cheese. 99.9% of terrorists are going to be carrying no worse than C4 or a 747. Thanks to Chernobyle, 99% of russians are going to be carrying life threatening invisible radiation (or that hot bisexual brunette from Tatu...)

All of us should be gravely concerned if a cold war nuclear education video is less terrifiying than a terrorism warning on Fox News.

I just love the old duck and cover videos.

"Yes, children, hiding underneath an inch of wood will protect you from the most destructive weapon humanity has ever devised!"

An additional fact about Fallout: they are an awesome series of games.

Vital information the public needs to know.

They forgot to mention horrible mutations and cancer from the fallout list of not fun things.

Pripyat in the Ukraine is a good example of what can happen to a normal city following something similar...

Talk about old school. My nuclear education consisted of being loaded onto a bus and driven out to the zoo, where, if there had been an accident at the local nuclear power plant, we'd be given pills to stop radiation poisoning.
