I believe the difference is that song is a self contained work of art, it doesn't belong to a larger picture like a symphony. A piece of music is a self contained work, but it is a part of a larger composition.

I somehow doubt that if he does become a classical pianist sensation that he would fall into the cliche downward spiral of rock stars. How many times do you see in magazines or news: "Concert pianist abuses booze and boobs"
