Not sure if you just used the heads (including the wood) but if you did, then scraping off the red shit (phosphorous) so you exclude the wood from the mix and crushing it into a finer powder should yield a better explosion.

^^that happened several years ago to a guy that lived down the street from me Trent.. Some tweeker (dude high on crystal meth) was making a pipe bomb, and while pouring wax in to seal the gunpower he accidently ignited it.. and as the police report said "they were picking up digits (fingers) from around the room".. After dude got out of the hospital we'd drive buy and honk the horn and laugh our asses off at him..
