During the weekday evening rush hour on August 1, 2007, the main spans of the I-35W Mississippi River bridge collapsed, falling into the river and onto its banks. At least five people were killed and about 100 injured when the concrete and steel span abruptly gave way in rush-hour traffic, sending dozens of vehicles and tons of debris into the river.
