Stadium Fire

The Bradford City Fire Disaster occurred on Saturday May 11, 1985 when a flash fire consumed one side of the Valley Parade football stadium in Bradford, England. The fire broke out during a football match between Bradford City and Lincoln City.

Five minutes before half-time, white smoke was seen rising from the rear of the 77-year-old wooden stand.

I remember watching this live on TV as it happened. Truly horrific... in just 1 minute the whole stand was ablaze. They were celebrating being promoted that day and nobody realised initially how bad it was. Back then, they used to lock the gates at the back of the stands to stop people getting in for free, but when the fire ripped thru, those at the back went there to escape and had no chance. Most of the 56 died at those gates.
