Perhaps you've never worked a "real" job, such as this. He will suffer no problems, save the rocks in the eyes he may have gotten or may not.
This shit happens all the time, it's how the world works. Sitting in front of your computer all day might not prepare you for the facts of life, but god damn.. when you puberty cases get you first job you'll learn some things ;)

I do Resource drilling and Blast technology.. so I drill and blow shit up. Weeeee... fact is, computer fucks (like I thought I would be one day) make shit for cash these days. People like this Machine operator likely makes about 200k per year. I make 150,000 a year to blow up shit.. You don't just "lose" your job. You have to buy beers for everyone that night, other then that. Shit goes fine :D

wow, tough shit, like "entreri" says, this shit does happen all the time, it only get's posted on the news when someone taddles or dies, other than that, a round of beers solves it all.

Also the reason they are spraying water is when your breaking anything lots of dust flies up, and the water is there to keep the dust limited.

Unfortunately it does breach safety regulations (in my country anyways) and if the incident does get reported, health and safety officers will get involved.

Someone will face disciplinary action (not necessarily the sack, and not necessarily the crane operator) most likely management and/or the supervisor.

But as mentioned above, if no one says anything its all fixed with a round of beers.

all that will happen is that he will lose "safety hours" this is basically for every hour you work safely it's added on to your christmas bonus. he probably lost 750 hours on that (about $1400 from his bonus)
