How to Trace IPs

It worked for me but I don't have any good IPs to trace.

It only gives you the exact location of the internet service provider of that IP but not the location of where the server or computer is located.

Thats kinda the hard way to findout an ip address of an website. Just use the ping command in your command prompt for an website to findout its ip address. For example, "ping www.whitehouse.gov". It will return with the ip address and ping result for that website. To find further information on ip addresses that currently connected to your computer, use command "netstat -a". This will show all the current connections and what port they are using.

This was once exploited to hack into others computers, before MS realised a patch and fixed the problem. It worked by, using Windows Messenger 4.1 (the version that comes with new XP installation). Using the Messenger, send a file to any one, which would open up a connection. While the file is being sent, open command promt, and type in "netstat -a", this will show the ip address of the file reciever and what port is being used. While the file is being sent, you have a trusted connection with that ip address, so this oppourtunity can be used to hack in. This is a form trojan. Also, u can use packet sniffers to find out open ports on an ip address, and hack in.

For better tracing, just use "Neo Trace". It shows the full routing table, with who or which company the ip addresses are registered to. The address and contact details of each of the routes and ip addresses. All will be shown on global map, so it will show the exact path, where it goes to reach the final destination. I use a older version of Neo Trace, not sure if the new versions can show satellite images. This can also be done from the Symantec website. It Also uses WhoIs service for better accurate results.

Ecnav, the reason it is showing a different city, because your ISP isnt located in your house, that is why it is showing a different location. The details it shows is the person or the company, which the ip address is registered to or owned by. Since it is using google maps, it is most likely to show the subarb or the town location rather, since the results from www.ip-adress.com goes by town name, not by exact address.

I work for an ISP - this is basically useless unless you know what you're doing because any website that's of any significance will have several layers of security as well as well-paid sysadmins. Knowing someone/something's IP address is hardly a security issue since DNS is used for this exact purpose - resolving domains.

and just to verify - the location that it'll give you is generally the address that the ISP registered their block of IPs with.

It was only about 5 miles off from my house. Kinda cool if you wanna find out what city somebody is located in, but pretty useless otherwise
