This guy is an awesome speaker and writer, I've read his book "death by black hole" and now I'm reading another book by him called "origins". They are some of the best books I've read on Astrophysics.

I like his idea on teaching Creationism just for awareness, not as fact like the idiotic fundamentalists want it

This guy is smart, but far from fluent. Anyone who argues for intelligent design should be booted from scientific academic circles. Look how Richard Dawkins is just waiting to tear this guy a new asshole at 12:32.

He's not arguing for intelligent design to be taught in science class, he's arguing that it be taught in history class as one of the reasons brilliant scientists become useless. He would be as anti-intelligent design as Dawkins in the science class.

He is one of the few scientists who fully consider and exploit human nature when promoting science. Dawkins is all dead cold intelect.

Either in spite of, or perhaps even because of, all of his reason and intellect, Tyson is a hundred times more mystical and spiritual than low-brow, bible-thumping fundamen-taliban. A perfect example, like the individuals he outlines here, of how the scientific and the spiritual can complement each other rather than compete...but only when we are allowed the imagination that fundamentalists, religious or scientific, jeopardize.

In reference to his "naming rights" segment, I think it's worthwhile to mention that each of the fruitful ages of discovery that contributed to our knowledge of life and the universe, the Greek investigators that gave us the names for the constellations he mentions, the Golden Age of Islam that further gave us the Arabic names for so many of those stars, the Renaissance and Enlightenment, were all charcterised not only by great scientific achievements, but artistic, social, political, and sexual revolutions as well.

The Greeks were famous pederasts, The Romans were pansexual hedonists, Abu Nuwas penned his Arabic odes to boylove openly during the Islamic Golden Age, Florence during the Renaissance makes today's Amsterdam or San Francisco look tame, and so on.

Conversely, the times when the pendulum swung backwards, demonising science and discovery while lionising superstition, are always typified by sexual repression as well as suppression of all all other types of free thought.

There is a reason that the "God Hates Fags" folks hate science as much as they hate sex. Phobias, -isms, and hate go hand in hand, as do freedoms.

p.s. Tyson makes much of Ghazali's fundamentalist influence on Islam, but ignores the role that the Christian Crusades had in ending the Islamic Golden Age. Ghazali's influence would likely have been negligible if the Crusaders hadn't helped to radicalise Islam.

he didn't mention that Einstein stopped when he got to the Quantum Theory because he reckoned "God does not play dice" [with the universe].

"God does not play dice" - no he plays "go fish" with the people who pray to him.

I hope you werent suggesting Einstein believed in god. He used the word 'god' in relation to things that were beyond his own comprehension. he certainly didn't believe in the christian/muslim/etc god.
