Actually neither the axle or wheel are the problem, it is in the differential. The gears must have been stripped or the entire rear end went out. The reason I know b/c I had this happen to me...not good to see your wheel and axle pass you as you are going down the road.

this is a truck with a semi-floating axle. This means that it doesn't use c clips to retain the axle in the differential, but an axle bearing pressed onto the axle behind the hub flange that has studs in its shell that fasten the bearing and, by proxy, the axle to the brake backing plate and the end of the axle housing. What happened here is that either the nuts came off the back (probably not well tightened at the last service) or the studs broke. The wheel, brake drum, and axle are all still attached to each other, but no longer to the axle housing. A very bad day.
