Simpsons Movie to Premiere in Springfiel...

The town of Springfield, Vermont beat 13 other Springfields from around the United States in an online vote for the right to host the premiere of the upcoming Simpsons movie.

The New England town, with a population of about 9,500, won with a video showing a Homer Simpson look-alike chasing a giant, pink donut through the town. It also boasted other similarities, such as having a nuclear power plant.

"After 18 years, it's good to finally welcome the Simpsons home. Vermonters love The Simpsons," Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont said in a statement.

The Vermont town beat Springfields in Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Louisiana in the "Simpsons spirit" video contest.

It landed 15,367 votes of 109,582 votes cast. Springfield, Illinois, coming in second with 14,634 votes and Springfield, Oregon, ranked third at 13,894.

The creator of the TV series, Matt Groening, located Homer, Marge and their children Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie in the fictional town of Springfield after noting that this was one of the most common U.S. town names.

In the TV series' 18-year history it has never been clear which of the 34 Springfields in the United States was the basis for the version in the cartoon, a satirical parody of Middle American lifestyle.

The contest sparked friendly rivalry, with some pulling in top-name endorsements such as Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy for his home state of Massachusetts and skateboarder Tony Hawk for the Oregon bid.

The premier of "The Simpsons Movie," being released by News Corp.'s 20th Century Fox, will be held on July 21 in Vermont, but the other 13 Springfields will also be given small screenings on July 26, the night before the movie hits theaters nationwide.

Judging from the trailer this movie has no real story and will thus suck ass ... apart from Homer of course, Homer is always funny.

Why is it that when a cartoon show is made into a movie, the movie has like a fucked up different color version than that of the show, what the ass is that all about?

yeah, i was gonna mention Matt Groehning was born in either springfield or eugene, Oregon(they're sister cities). I've lived in both places, and i clearly remember reading about Matt's confession of the real springfield. the nuclear plant is representative of the formerly HIGHLY pollutive Weyerhaeuser paper mill; Jebediah Springfield is really a copy of the statue on the UO campus; and a whole plethora of other inspirations. But the nuclear plant was inspired by the Trojan plant near portland, and the street names are pulled from both Eugene and Portland. i wish i could remember the other parallels, but that's all i got for now.

but it's probably best that we don't let a place like springfield represent our state with such a HUGE premier... not to mention the ridiculous construction on I-5 at the N.Springfield exit.

and uh... GO BEAVERS! or ducks too really... any friend of Oregon is a friend of mine.

I am one of 200 volunteers who appeared in the winning Springfield Vermont video. After we helped our local Chamber of Commerce win the contest, they turned their backs on us. We should have been the first in town to be invited to view the world premiere of The Simpsons Movie but instead we were kept off the invitation list so the more elite members of the community could all be invited instead. And then not even a word of thanks or mention of us in the public ceremony outside the theater. Read more and view our famous winning video now at our new website:
