it really sucks that capoeira dosnt involve physical contact these days.
but understandable why they would make it non contact if you have seen the velocity and power their kicks can be thrown. Good clip

I remember some Brazilian guy in my school ages ago gave a talk on this and showed a similar video, mostly we laughed as it looks pretty cool when the guy is doing the moves on his own then you watch two of them dancing together and it suddenly looks about as impressive as two kids pretend fighting, they dont come remotely close to hitting each other and move frighteningly slowly.

@bombomb It doesn't it seems... I thought it was a cool video and it was lumped in with a bunch of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu videos so I made the assumption.

A lot of the lack of contact has to do with the art which developed during slavery, the lack of contact and punching is due is a response both to having to hide the art and being forced to practice while being chained. I had a friend who was doing this for a while at school, one day he accidentally hit the instructor. The instructor proceeded to demonstrate on him the moves with contact and how devastating they can be. The school canceled the group after that because it was deemed to violent.

Eddy Gordo in Tekken 3 has loads of moves based on Capoeira. Such a good game. I like Capoeira - Lots of flow and smooth movement. More of a dance rather than combat. Of course someone who is good at Capoeira can apply it to combat. Good stuff.

capoeira was started by slaves who were chained by the hands and they developed their own way to defend themselves. it grow into 1 of the most deadlist arts. then it went to street fighing where they would strap knives to their feet, so someone was going to die again it became one of the most deadlist arts.

it was outlawed because of the fatalities. so it changed into a dance so it could still carry on but in disguise.

anyone who says a negative comment about it doesnt understand the art so in other words stop talking about something you dont understand. learn more then have an opinion or take on one of these guys and learn first hand how deadly it is.

^ if you think capoeira is one of the "most deadlist arts" or even a half decent efficient and effective fighting system...

then my friend... you're the one that doesnt understand

ehh there are lots of places where they do make physical contact whilst playing, its more fun (and everyone knows, fun rules). Also, this guy is good but I have never seen videos on the internet which show the really really really good brazilian fighters which are like 40 years old and are inhumanely flexible. You can actually see reality bending when you look at how much some fighters have achieved.

firstly i never said the "most" i said "1 of the most". learn to read that will probably help you to understand.

secondly try getting close to someone who is spinning and can kick you 3 or 4 times at speed and with a lot of power and then take another position and kick you 3 or 4 more times.

you need to know where it came from and how it developed. if you dont know these things then shut the hell up.

happy reading, thats if you can.

I find it interesting to see that a few kicking techniques look strikingly similar to some in Tae Kwon Do. Is it sheer coincidence that two distinctly separate styles developed on opposite ends of the world share common techniques?

I love doing capoeira its damn fun.

Yeah @Ironman, it wasnt ever one of the deadliest. The streetfights that took place were seperate from the actual Capoeira, and more and more people brought the dirty tricks from the street to the ring. (For example its like boxers bringing ironknuckles under their glove). The reason it was outlawed for a while was because after slavery was abolished people had no where to go and joined gangs and since Capoeira was THE social martial arts, gang members trained in Capoeira and because of it, capoeira became well known for ties with gang wars. What was killing people was the lack of respect to the opposing players and demoralization of the art from the increase of gangs and disrespect. The people that died in the ring, died because a player was at the opposite end of strikes with people that hid blades under their feet or wherever else. Just because someone uses a weapon doesn't make the martial art itself any more deadly.

The initial construct of Capoeira was contact and striking the other player but wasn't considered nearly as effective as other martial arts.

Yeah the competitors really do develop extreme power in their kicks. But the same can be said for boxers which is almost the perfect opposite to capoeira.

You can join schools which differ focus on parts of Capoeira. Schools can focus of take downs, striking other players, ground work, acrobatics etc.
The school I go to likes to play with acrobatics and takedowns. Which is really fun. (woo in the process of learning S-Dobrado!)

Think what you want of Capoeira I do it because its fun and I enjoy the culture.

Ohh and @GotBoost its true the kicks are similar but really how many ways is there to throw kicks before they start looking similar?

*deep breath*

Capoeira looks great, but I'd actually like to see them make some contact.. Anyone know where I can find one of those videos?

hmm: Brazillian ju jitsu is simply an adaptation of Japanese ju jitsu so it's not an oximoron. It's different but derived from the same place. Plus it's far more effective.
I think it'd be interesting to see someone meld this sport into an effective mma technique. Because we all know that in a streetfight with two trained fighters if you can't use your hands or wrestle, 99999 out of 100000 you're going to get your ass kicked.
