Break-through in Solar Tech

This is nano-solar, a company located in Palo Alto, Cali(and a plant in Germany). They have revolutionized the making of solar technology.

Nanosolar is on track to make solar electricity:
i. Cost-efficient for ubiquitous deployment.
ii. Mass-produced on a global scale.
iii. Available in many versatile forms.

I wonder how much it costs compared to normal ones and how much energy a same size sheet would generate compared to a normal solar cell? It doesn't say on the website.

I remember seeing stuff about this when they first started getting the tech working. It's pretty low efficiency, but should be cheap enough, light enough, etc., to have huge areas. IE. make up in price/area what you lose in output/area.

They are also thinking towards much wider sheet than what we see in the clip, and about using mylar/foil type plastic backing sheet. That points towards HUGE areas for very low cost.

imagine all the money that has been spent on war being spent on discovering these kinds of revolutionary ideas... well at least a guy can dream.

Awesome. Now let's hope that big oil doesn't assassinate this before it becomes practical.

i have a question about solar tech. when sunlight knocks/excites electrons from silicon, won't the silicon run out of electrons? or does it get electrons from the gas in the air or are there electrons floating around that replaces the excited ones? what is the source of electrons in this new material?

stbasdf: the silicon does not run out of electrons cause electrons only go in one direction in the solar cell. electrons will go out one direction, through a load, and back through another connection into the solar cell.

It's a loop.

I love how cool technology is ALWAYS "10-15" years away!
